Job Description


The job of the Floater Custodian is necessary for the purpose/s of providing custodial services at various assigned
sites across the district; maintaining an attractive, sanitary, and safe facility for students, staff, and public at
district facilities; providing equipment and furniture arrangements for meetings, classroom activities, and events;
and minimizes property damage, loss, and liability exposure.


This position reports to the Maintenance & Custodial Services Office.

This position works 12 months/260 days.

Qualifications


Education: High School diploma or equivalent.


Certificates & Licenses: None required.


Experience: Job-related experience is required.


Essential Functions

Accepts work assignments in multiple buildings and across different shifts to provide buildings with appropriate custodial staffing. Assists with site snow removal and treating icy surfaces to ensure access and safety. Cleans assigned facilities and grounds (e.g. classrooms, offices, restrooms, gyms, multipurpose rooms, corridors, carpets, removes graffiti, windows, walls, restrooms, bleachers, stage, locker rooms, cafeteria, dump trash, etc.) to maintain a sanitary, safe and attractive environment. Learns multiple building layouts and cleaning assignments for effective custodial assistance within the building as assigned. Arranges furnishings and equipment for meetings, classroom activities, and special events. Respond to immediate safety and operational concerns (e.g. facility damage, unauthorized persons, alarms, etc.) and take appropriate action to resolve immediate safety issues and maintain a functioning educational environment, to prevent injuries and ensure site safety; report issues to appropriate personnel. Replenishes classrooms and restroom supplies (e.g. paper towels, toilet paper, soap, hand sanitizer, etc.) to ensure adequate quantities for daily use. Performs summer maintenance (e.g. strip/wax floors, top scrub, moves furniture, etc.) for the purpose of completing a deep clean of the building ahead of the following school year while also working around summer construction, summer learning and ACPS partnerships. Maintains supplies and equipment (e.g. cleaning solutions, paper products, vacuum, mops, etc.) to ensure the availability of items required to properly stock facilities. Secures facilities and grounds (e.g. lock doors, gates, alarms, turn off lights, take down flags, etc.) to minimize property damage, equipment loss, and potential liability to the district (by assignment). May perform duties as assigned to support the department and school division. Warehouse delivers a variety of items (e.g., supplies, mail, packages, furniture, cleaning equipment, etc.); distribution of materials to the appropriate parties within the site. Receive and process incoming orders and provide thorough documentation. Follow safety precautions when operating equipment. Stay current with warehousing policies to contribute to a safe and appropriate work environment. Manage inventory count and ensure all product is rotated regularly to keep products ready for our team. Wear appropriate safety gear. Ensure equipment, trucks, and vans are properly maintained and receive repairs as necessary. Utilizes a computer and phone for reading and responding to email daily, participating in online training, submitting work orders, and utilizing other computer-based systems deployed throughout the district. Including but not limited to accessing run maps and shared documents, and completing computer-based training modules to maintain communication, knowledge, and skills.

Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications


SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills to
meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform
the functions of the job include operating equipment used in industrial maintenance including
electrical cleaning equipment, common tools, chemicals, etc.; and adhering to safety practices.


KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percent’s,
and/or ratios; read and follow instructions; and understand multi-step written and oral instructions.
Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job
include: methods of industrial cleaning; and safety practices and procedures.


ABILITY is required to perform manual, physical labor for up to eight hours a day/five days a week,
and use a variety of job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of
circumstances and operate equipment using a variety of standardized methods. Problem solving
ability is required to follow prescribed guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is limited to
moderate. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the
job include: physical strength and stamina for performing job functions, adapting to changing work
priorities; communicating with diverse groups; meeting deadlines and schedules; working as part of
a team; working with constant interruptions; being available on-call; displaying mechanical aptitude;
and working with frequent interruptions.

Working Environment


The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical
demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some climbing ladders and balancing,
climbing up and down stairs, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, and/or crawling and
significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 5% sitting, 40% walking, and 55%
standing. The job is performed under temperature variations that includes working outside during
cold, snowy or icy conditions and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
