DescriptionThe veterinary technician is the veterinarian’s primary medical support. They begin the examination procedure and continue to assist the doctor throughout the examination, diagnosis and treatment phases. They aid the veterinarians in achieving greater efficiency by relieving them of technical work and administrative detail. They have a very significant role in communicating with and educating clients about their pets. Key Responsibilities
- Providing compassionate care to patients and clients.
- Maintaining positive, cooperative relationships with other employees.
- Understanding the importance of a clean and orderly facility, cleaning or organizing as part of normal job duty.
- Preparing and maintaining the exam rooms and treatment areas.
- Keeping accurate medical records in accordance with hospital policy.
- Admitting patients following hospital policy and doctors written orders.
- Effectively restraining pets. Understanding all common vaccinations and vaccination protocols.
- Handling client’s medical questions with confidence and directing to veterinarians when appropriate.
- Understanding usage, dosage, and common side-effects for commonly used prescription drugs. Giving SQ, IM and IV injections.
- Reading clinical laboratory procedures including skin scrapings, ear cytologies, urinalysis, and fungal cultures; drawing blood for laboratory analysis; running in-house lab work ensuring that test results are recorded in patient records.
- Preparing estimates for procedures and discussing financial commitments with clients supporting hospital financial policies.
- Caring for all surgical materials; keeping the operating room properly stocked and prepared for surgery.
- Assisting the veterinarian in medical, surgical and dental procedures; preparing patients for surgery; administering anesthesia; monitoring patients during surgery and recovery; administering fluids.
- Anticipating veterinarian needs in order to expedite appointments, treatments, and surgical procedures.
- Knowing common disease states and alerting veterinarians when symptoms change or when concerns arise with hospitalized patients.
- Performing emergency procedures such as control of bleeding, resuscitation with oxygen, opening airways, and external cardiac massage.
- Effectively positioning for and taking radiographs.
- Performing dental prophylaxis and taking dental radiographs.
- Placing IV catheters and understanding the use and care of IV pumps.
- Preparing a patient and the machine for an ultrasound procedure.
- Discharging patients based on the veterinarian’s orders, ensuring that patients are well groomed and in a medically appropriate state.
- Explaining necessary follow-up and post- surgical homecare instructions
- Using proper etiquette for progress reports including fecal results, heartworm results and surgery reminders.
- Demonstrating a strong desire to advance clinical skill set by participating in and seeking out continuing education opportunities.
Skills, Knowledge & Expertise
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Experience in a veterinary setting
- Completion of an AVMA accredited Veterinary Technology program
- Current Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) license
