New York, United States Columbia University Full time

The Heilbrunn Department of Population and Family Health in the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University is a vibrant department of approximately 19 full-time faculty from a variety of professional backgrounds (public health disciplines, law, sociology, psychology, medicine, social work, education, and demography) whose work focuses on domestic and global issues related to sexual and reproductive health and rights, forced migration, child and adolescent health and development, environmental justice, human rights, and complex health systems. The Department works to shift health policy and practice to improve health systems and health outcomes for populations in low-income, unstable, or inequitable environments worldwide. Faculty in this largely grant-funded department engage in a unique combination of research, teaching and service activities. Graduates of the Department pursue careers as research scientists, NGO leaders, and public health practitioners and evaluators who actively contribute to the scientific literature and assume important academic posts and public health leadership globally.

The Heilbrunn Department of Population and Family Health is recruiting for a candidate in child and adolescent health and development. The successful applicant is expected to have an emerging or well-developed independent research portfolio, depending on rank, including scholarly contributions to the scientific literature, externally funded research, and national/international recognition in their field of interest. We seek candidates who will help to further develop the Department and School's child and adolescent research, educational, and policy agenda. The individual will be encouraged to collaborate across disciplines and departments within the School and the University. Our child, adolescent and family-related work spans local community activity and major global efforts. We seek candidates who will conceptualize research, identify funding sources, prepare proposals, establish research collaborations, and carry out funded projects. Interests in the biological basis for child and adolescent health and optimal development, as well as community-based contextual determinants of child and family well-being are desirable areas of expertise.

The incumbent will add to the child and adolescent health expertise of the Department and serve in several key roles in research, coursework and student programming. It is expected that the successful candidate will teach one or more departmental courses related to child and adolescent health. The incumbent will also mentor students and actively engage in the academic life of the Department, including student advising and committee membership. A demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with faculty, students, community organizations and other external partners is critical to this position.

The position includes the opportunity to lead the Child, Youth, and Family Health certificate. The certificate program in Child, Youth and Family Health offers a curriculum that addresses many public health problems – such as asthma, obesity, mental health problems, and high-risk behaviors for sexually transmitted diseases – that have roots in early childhood. The certificate prepares students to handle these situations and take leadership roles in the design, implementation, and evaluation of public health programs and policies at the local, national, and global level. Graduates have proficiency in the physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development of children from the prenatal period though early infancy, adolescence, and young adulthood, within a multi‐level social context.

Salary and academic rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The selected candidate will receive an academic appointment, as non-tenured or tenure track, commensurate with credentials and qualifications.

Requires a PhD, MD, or professional equivalent. A doctoral degree in public health, biology, psychology, social science, social work, education, nursing, medicine, or a related field is required.
