Position Information

New Hanover County is looking for a Household Hazardous Waste Program Assistant  to join our  Recycling & Solid Waste Department. 
Responsibilities for this role include:
Assist in the collection, processing, storage, and preparation of electronic waste and household hazardous waste for shipment. Maintain the building and grounds associated with the facility and identify chemicals to determine appropriate blending, packaging and storage method to be used. Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.  Performs work during emergency/disaster situations. Located in coastal southeastern North Carolina, the New Hanover County Recycling & Solid Waste Department oversees one of the state’s most advanced integrated solid waste disposal systems. The Department operates a recycling drop-off collection system, a Household Hazardous Waste and electronic waste collection system, a RCRA Subtitle D landfill, Construction and Demolition Debris (C&D) diversion, and yard waste passive composting operations. The resulting system minimizes the use of land resources consumed for burying the waste we generate and minimizes the potential risks for contaminating the area’s delicate environment.

Hours:
 Monday - Friday from 7:00am - 3:30pm and alternating Saturdays 8:00am - 12:00pm
Must be available to report for emergency work assignment during emergency situations.

Employment Type:
 Full time, non-exempt
Salary Information:
The hiring range for this position starts at $17.46 hour; $36,325.00 annually, plus a competitive benefits package.  Salary will be determined based on qualifications, internal equity, budget, and market considerations.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:

High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) and two years of experience related to the program area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above The ability to operate a forklift and pick-up truck.  Physical Requirements: Standing for most hours in an outdoor work environment with exposure to various types of weather/elements Frequent heavy lifting of at least 50 lbs. The work is typically performed in an environment where the employee may be exposed to varying temperature and/or weather conditions as well as varying degrees of distractions, conditions and/or chemicals and/or waste which requires the employee to pay attention to one’s own safety as well as that of customers and citizens served.

Licenses and Certifications: 

Valid Driver's License (from any state) and good driving record required at time of application.  Valid North Carolina Driver’s License required by first date of employment with good driving record.
