JOB SUMMARY:
Under generaldirection with supervision and frequent review sets up and operates a centerlessgrinding machine to grind external or internal cylindrical or tapered surfaces,angles, contours etc. of various metal workpieces to blueprintspecifications and exacting tolerances. Determines sequences of grinding operations,the amount of cut, the dressing of wheel, etc. to perform work assignments. May perform rework ofparts produced.DESCRIPTION OF ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Include the following. Other duties may be assigned as necessitated by Company production requirements.
Under supervision sets-up and operates various grinders. Mounts grinding wheels, regulating wheels, etc. per requirements of task. Dresses wheels to specifications. Sets specific grinding speeds, feed rates and spacings per task requirements. Selects proper abrasive wheels, holding fixtures, etc. and determines the amount of passes to take to optimize efficiency of equipment/machines. Measures, marks and scribes stock for grinding. Plans sequence of operations. Applies a knowledge of shop theory, § hop practices etc. for grinding operations. Verifies dimensions, alignments and clearances to specifications. Uses various precision measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, gauges, etc. Grinding to exacting tolerances of ± .0005. May perform 1st article inspection. Reads and interprets documents such as blueprints, sketches, models or descriptions, or works from verbal orders, and visualizes product to determine dimensions, tolerances and final configuration of parts to be ground. Provides necessary counts, processes documentation correctly, and maintains daily production logs using computer software applications or production worksheets. Keeps interim records for subassemblies, material, tooling, rework, etc. while in the cell. Works as an active team member by participatingin problem solving, team building, and all other team activities to improve theprocesses, productivity, quality, etc. of the productionoperations in a cell. Uses interpersonalskills as well as good written and verbal communications. Assists other cell members as requiredEquipment/Process Responsibilities - Performs duties where property, tools, equipment or machines may be damaged, orman hours lost through improper daily maintenance or attention to processing.Assists in set up and calibration of a grinding machines for the jobs performed.Maintains machine.
Material orProduct Responsibilities - Performs duties that require close attention to work and supportingdocumentation specifications and other requirements. Responsibility foraccuracy of parts machined. Visually and/or with measuring instruments, checkswork performed for proper results.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
EnvironmentalSurroundings - Work is ina machine shop environment where noise, temperature fluctuations, therepetitive nature of job, etc. are less desirable than in a typical officeenvironment. Expose to considerable amounts of cutting oils.
UnavoidableHazards - Possiblehazards related to cuts, bruises, finger and hand injuries and muscle strains.Exposure to metalworking fluids and airborne particles. Protective safety wearand equipment should be worn as appropriate to the task at hand.
EFFORT
Physical - Able to lift up to 50pounds. Requires strength to adjust requisite equipment to set-upspecifications. Hand and finger manipulation of parts and equipment controls.Must be able to hand feed all the various size parts to be machined into thegrinder. Able to reach, bend and stretch. Able to use tools required formachine set-up which may be fatiguing and require extensive physical exertionfor extended periods of time. Most job assignments require standing and/orsitting for periods exceeding 15 minutes at a time.
Mental - Work at times is highly repetitive and monotonous. However, set-up and/ormachine repair is varied and may require improvisation and ingenuity. Reasoningability required to interpret complex blueprints and documentation of a highlytechnical nature. Must be able to draw valid conclusions from a variety ofabstract and concrete variables. Required to run a grinding machine be able toorganize work flow for best efficiency.
Visual - Close attention to detail with moderateeye concentration over long periods of time. Able to read various precision instruments:such as micrometers, calipers, gauges, etc. Must be able to visually checkworkpieces for quality.
Qualifications
EDUCATION/TRAINING
Demonstratedability to read and write English of a level required in Company shop documentsand computer software entry and processing requirements. Must be capable ofapplying mathematical operations using fractions, decimals, trigonometry andgeometry as required by cell machining operations. Generally equivalent tojourneyman trade school graduate or equivalent.
EXPERIENCE
Requires1-3 years' work experience or equivalent skills and knowledge expertise in theset-up and operation of grinding machines, tools and equipment which aresimilar or comparable to those used by the Company and which are necessary tofulfill job requirements. Must read precision measuring instruments such ascalipers and micrometers and engineering diagrams similar or comparable to those used ingrinding operations by the Company. Must be familiar with use of computerizedinput system of production results.
