General Summary of Position
Provides timely, knowledgeable and professional phlebotomy procedures to all in-patient, out-patient and contracted service patients while maintaining an acute awareness of the age specific needs of each client. Maintains a professional appearance while inspiring procedural confidence through knowledgeable application of their skills. Processes collected specimens in a manner that supports specimen integrity guidelines.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Maintains a complete understanding of all patient data entry requirements in accordance with policy and procedure. Understands and practices Patient Safety Goals as outlined annually by Joint Commission. Knowledgeable in all phlebotomy techniques to include micro puncture, venipuncture, blood bank collection process, blood culture collection process, and bleeding time. Utilize the Is familiar with the laboratory reception, front desk area and able to cover as required. Explain all processes to assist in minimizing customer/patient anxiety. Answer patient questions when appropriate and within their scope of practice. Prints Pending Logs, reviews and follows through with uncollected specimens. Works as a team member to assists others on shift in completing assignments. Participates in inter or intra departmental performance improvements. Performs such other related and ancillary duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Education

Vocational/Technical Diploma Completion of an accredited organization that includes phlebotomy training required

Experience

1-2 years Phlebotomy experience preferred and Phlebotomy technician, certification from agencies examples (ASCP, NPA, APA preferred

Licenses and Certifications

CNA - Certified Nursing Assistant ASCP - American Society of Clinical Pathologist

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Ability to comprehend and follow the policies and procedures for MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center. Ability to read, write and speak or communicate in English to successfully accomplish the essential duties of the position. Ability to demonstrate ethical behavior that supports the hospital's mission, values and commitment to compliance with all federal, state and regulatory laws. Inspires trust and exhibits honesty and integrity within the scope of daily activities. Exhibits professionalism, courtesy and excellent customer service, while interacting with patients, guests and co-workers. Ability to work effectively with people from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds. Ability to maintain patient confidentiality. Is oriented with and knowledgeable of all nursing home policies and procedures and understands their requirements to provide nursing home support. Is completely familiar with and compliant with all send out procedures Update knowledge and skills to maintain competency. Ability to assess a situation, consider alternatives and choose appropriate course of action. Ability to anticipate a customer's/patient's concerns and provide appropriate reassurances. Ability to adjust to peaks in workload; demonstrating flexibility and adaptability to change in a positive and cooperative manner. Knowledge and ability to make suggestions for improvements to procedures or innovations to enhance patient service. Ability to use computer systems as required by position.
