Job Description



Mountain Empire Community College is a comprehensive two-year college serving residents of Lee, Scott, Wise, and Dickenson counties, and the City of Norton. MECC is one of twenty-three colleges in the Virginia Community College System and operates under policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Local Advisory Board. The College is financed primarily with state funds, supplemented by contributions from the local jurisdictions.

Teach assigned respiratory therapy, medical terminology, and health sciences courses in all formats (face to face, hyflex, hybrid, and online) during the day, evening, and/or weekends. This will include utilizing the simulation laboratory for instruction. Coordinate all clinical activities, including, but not limited to assigning clinicals and supervising clinical activities, maintaining affiliation agreements, handling complaints, and maintaining good working relationships with all affiliates and staff. Advise students on curriculum, career goals, and complete other advising responsibilities. Serve on college/program committees. Develop new courses as required. Maintain instructional records. Assist in recruitment and retention efforts. Assist in the budget process. Assist in maintaining CoARC accreditation. Maintain a minimum of 10 office hours per week. Establish and assess student learning outcomes and participate in institutional effectiveness initiatives to include assessment, program planning, and program reviews. Participate in college, division, community, and professional activities. Pursue professional growth and development activities in the discipline. Provide program fiscal oversight and budget management. Establish and maintain effective relationships with students, faculty, staff, program medical director, and other stakeholders important to the college. Maintain labs, laboratory equipment, and supplies. Assist and mentor adjunct faculty. Perform other such duties as may be deemed appropriate.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA's/Required Qualifications KSAs and Competencies Required for Success in the Position: Has a thorough understanding of diversity in student populations and the ability to connect with, include, and consider all student populations in curriculum development and teaching. Understands and has a belief in the comprehensive mission of community colleges. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, faculty, staff, and other stakeholders important to the college. Knowledge of and ability to integrate technology in the classroom and via distance delivery modes. Proficient in oral and written communication. Minimum Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited academic institution. Hold a valid Registered Respiratory Therapy (RRT) credential. Minimum of five (5) years’ clinical experience as a Registered Respiratory Therapist. Additional Considerations Two or more years successful experience teaching or precepting in respiratory therapy or a related health sciences field. Teaching experience with Canvas or other LMS. Master’s degree from an accredited academic institution. Current AHA BLS, ACLS, and PALS certification. Current certification as an AHA ACLS, PALS, and BLS instructor. Completion of the CoARC Key Personnel Academy (KPA). 6 months to two years acute care Respiratory Therapy supervisory experience.
