Job Summary

Provide project coordination support to the Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) Fire and Life Safety Program to ensure compliance with university policies and applicable regulations and standards. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Coordinate all aspects of fire and life safety installations necessary to support construction/renovation activities. Conduct site visits, attend project planning meetings, respond to requests for information, oversee outside vendors in the installation/modification, and perform or witness final acceptance testing of fire and life safety systems. Work with all University stakeholders and contractors to facilitate the installation of fire and life safety systems to construction/renovation projects. Maintain and track program budget. Facilitate the timely correction of life safety systems inspection and building fire & life safety inspection deficiencies. Coordinate with fire protection engineers to ensure fire and life safety installations adhere to National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards and University policies, etc. Oversee and coordinate scheduling of third-party vendors in performing inspection, testing, maintenance, and repairs of fire and life safety systems, extinguishers, system clocks, etc. in accordance with NFPA requirements. Ensure that fire and life safety system impairments are corrected in a timely manner and coordinate implementation of interim measures as necessary. Interface and coordinate with campus partners regarding life safety system issues. Oversee the performance of contractors to ensure compliance with construction documents, NFPA and other applicable established standards, project schedules, and quality of workmanship. Evaluate, document, and report the degree of project completion. Obtain life safety system quotes for construction projects, review associated costs pertaining to projects, program budget, and purchase orders for services and equipment. Create task orders for JOC contractors, for annual inspections and maintenance. Review and process vendor invoices for payment. Review plans and specifications for renovation and new construction projects to ensure compliance with NFPA and other established codes and standards. Provide written comments as necessary. Make repairs and/or installation of fire system alarm equipment and facilitate/review fire alarm system programming as required. Maintain fire alarm parts inventory through department’s inventory database system. Assist with permitting for special campus/ department outreach events or activities, e.g., tent, outdoor grill, and hot work permitting, etc. Schedule fire watch for systems down and support fire panel watch for events. Respond to fire alarms and assist with campus fire and life safety systems as directed to facilitate campus operations per EH&S procedures. (i.e., fire alarm device disabling, etc.). Conduct or assist with training personnel and/or students in fire prevention, fire extinguisher use, fire alarm device awareness, fire stopping, hot work, etc. as directed. Maintain 40-hour HAZWOPER Certification to include the ability to wear respiratory protection. Review/revise existing and develop new standard operating procedures (SOP) per established best practices and/or department and University policies. Document, review and maintain records relating to the Fire and Life Safety programs and system inspection, maintenance, repairs, etc. as directed. Perform miscellaneous duties to assist with other Fire & Life Safety Program and EH&S department projects as assigned. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in fire science, engineering, natural science, industrial hygiene, environmental science, or related science field or equivalent. Three (3) years of experience in fire and life safety. Obtain within one (1) year of hire and maintain Level I NICET Fire Alarm Systems Certification, if the certification is not already obtained. Obtain within one (1) year of hire and maintain 40-hour HAZWOPER Certification, if the certification is not already obtained. Comprehensive knowledge of fire and life safety application of local, state, and federal laws, codes, regulations, standards, specifications, and policies. Preferred Qualifications Significant experience in project management with the ability to organize and effectively coordinate multiple tasks, with good follow-through. Two (2) or more years of experience with a sizable fire safety program. Experience with fire and life safety plan review and extensive knowledge of fire protection systems (notification and/or suppression). Level II or higher NICET Fire Alarm System Certification. Experience performing fire alarm system software programming. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Proficient computer and communication skills. Ability to work independently or with small groups without direct supervision. Excellent attention to detail and ability to take direction. Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Knowledge of a wide range of principles, concepts, and practices in applying established analytical and evaluative methods and techniques to fire safety program operations. Ability to use firefighting and investigating equipment, including fire extinguishers, oxygen analyzers, gas and toxic materials detectors and personal protective equipment. Ability to complete all physical tasks as needed. Other Requirements A class “C” operator’s driver’s license. The applicant selected must provide a current three-year driving record from the state in which the person currently resides. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver’s license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident.
