Colorado State Universitys School of Biomedical Engineering (SBME)s Academic Advisor collaborates with one other undergraduate academic advisor in the department, the Director of Undergraduate Programs (DUP), and the SBME faculty to support undergraduate Biomedical Engineering (BME) students.

This is an Administrative Professional position that is eligible for CSU Benefits and matching DCP (retirement). SBME is comprised of approximately 40 core faculty, an expected population of + BME dual degree and ~40 BME minor students. The advisors will work closely together to holistically advise and support students in making critical transitions, developing academic plans for academic and personal success, and connecting with campus resources. The candidate will report to the Interim Associate Director of Undergraduate Programs, School of Biomedical Engineering.

Occasional evening and weekend work is required.

The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by the proposed start date (July 8th). The Department will not sponsor a visa for this position. Essential Duties Job Duty Category Advising Duty/Responsibility BME undergraduate advisors are experts in the undergraduate dual degree pathway curricula and support students in choosing relevant programs, courses, maintaining course sequencing, and encouraging co-curricular experiences and promotion of timely graduation. In addition, BME advisers provide expertise in all BME courses, all dual degree programs curricular flow, and have a strong working knowledge of all partner majors highly sequenced and complex curricula. BME advisors collaborate with partner departments on curriculum and work collaboratively with 1015 partner major advisers to ensure student support. Model personal and professional ethics.

Demonstrate knowledge, compassion, and relevant ability with culturally diverse and other historically underrepresented communities to provide accurate, respectful, and holistic advising for all students in all the five dual degree BME pathways. Model personal and professional ethics in all interactions with faculty, students and staff.

Semesterly Advising: Meet with currently enrolled BME students once per semester to review academic plan, progress, and help students maneuver university systems and supports. Understand and communicate all 15 regular and Honors dual degree curricula in the five BME pathways: BME with Chemical & Biological Engineering, BME with Computer Engineering, BME with Electrical Engineering, BME with Electrical Engineering with Lasers & Optics Concentration, BME with Mechanical Engineering. BME advisors are the sole advisors for students in the BME+MECH program and are thus expert in those two highly sequenced and complicated curricula. Advise and advocate for students regarding academic requirements, class scheduling, 5- year academic plans, and administrative procedures related to academics, including campus and community referrals. Advise students of transfer evaluation of coursework and clarify and recommend any additional necessary reevaluations. Advocate and provide guidance/resources regarding students academic and personal concerns. Help students develop plans to overcome academic challenges and difficulties. Develop individual support and oversee programming to support historically underrepresented student populations, first generation students, and other important groups of students. Maintain accurate and detailed advising notes/student records through an online database system, track advisees performance at the end of each semester, and provide intentional outreach to particular groups of students such as students with low midterm grades/low GPAs/on academic probation. Utilize technology systems Banner, Navigate) to track student success, verify graduation requirements, overrides, exceptions, study abroad, and other advising related issues. Advise students requesting retroactive withdrawals and academic dismissal appeals on how to create well-written appeals. Facilitate transfer credit evaluations and applicability to degree plan. Facilitate approval and administer course substitutions, overrides and waivers for degree requirements. BME Minor: Advise all SBME minor students. Understand and communicate the minor curricula in person, through email and on SBME website; meet with students to explain how a minor fits into academic plan and goals. Oversee the process to help students add/delete the minor, add students to SBME student database, keep accurate records, process course exception requests, review graduation contracts. Ongoing Advising-related Responsibilities: Keep current on curricular changes, make suggestions and improvements on curricular alignments with dual degree programs. Actively participate in campus-wide adviser training efforts; keep current and work collaboratively with SBME team on constantly changing guidelines, processes, systems and resources that support student success. Keep current with new technology and tools designed for student success and integrate them into a balanced and holistic approach to advising. Gather data for requested reports. Implement conflict management and conflict resolution decision-making skills when working with students, faculty and staff. Collaborate on BME advising publications, websites, social media, and other student resources. Comply with University and FERPA guidelines. Participate in university-wide programs such as Summer Orientation, RamWelcome, WSCOE programs student barbeques, research presentations, career fairs and employer events) to encourage student support and engagement. Represent the SBME at college and university advisor meetings. Percentage Of Time 60% Job Duty Category SBME Undergraduate Recruitment Duty/Responsibility Serve as point-person for prospective students and families when asking questions about SBMEs undergraduate programs. Collaboratively create strategic recruiting plan with BME undergraduate team; team lead in implementing plan. Partner with Walter Scott, Jr College of Engineering (WSCOE) recruiting team, and with selected schools and organizations to increase enrollments per annual goals. Establish recruitment calendar for SBME; communicate/coordinate with SBME team regarding who will be at events to best represent SBME. Ensure sufficient representation of BME faculty, staff, and students at CSU-hosted recruitment events. Order promotional materials to distribute to potential students. Percentage Of Time 10% Job Duty Category International Program Development/Management Duty/Responsibility Support current efforts and create new opportunities in providing international experiences for dual degree students. Support program leaders in organization, curricular expectations, pre-departure meetings and other programmatic elements to ensure positive student experience. Work collaboratively with CSU OIP and other campus entities to promote and support programs. Manage application/scholarship and selection processes, update website and other information sources. SBME Scholarship/Awards: Lead selection process and review teams for SBME-specific scholarships and annual awards for outstanding BME undergraduate student awards.First Year and Senior Gifts: Coordinate and order gifts for our incoming first year students and graduating dual degree students in accordance with available budget.
