JOB SUMMARY

The Hyperbaric Nurse LPN administers oxygen therapy and diagnostic testing to patients of the Department of Hyperbaric Medicine, under the supervision of a hyperbaric physician. All therapeutic and diagnostic modalities will be ordered by the hyperbaric physician. The Hyperbaric Technician will be able to demonstrate the following essential competencies, duties and responsibilities as a result of education, experience and NCH initial orientation and ongoing corporate learning. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

· Ascertains that the patient’s diagnosis is one of the appropriate approved disorders for Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, and that the said diagnosis is clearly entered on the Patient’s charts/records.

· Implements the physician’s orders as indicated by the patient’s treatment plan.

· Educates patient and/or patient’s family as to the benefits, risks, contraindications, and safety issues of hyperbaric oxygen therapy before treatment.

· Performs blood glucose monitoring as ordered and indicated by patient diagnosis.

· Inspects the patient prior to the commencement of each Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy session to ensure all safety standards are being adhered to.

· Performs the hyperbaric treatments and monitors the patient during therapy.

· Performs dressing changes and/or wound care as ordered and participates in clinic when HBO volumes are below par.

· Takes photographs of the wound for reporting of the patient’s progress.

· Evaluates the patient outcome and meets with the manager and the hyperbaric physician to discuss patient treatment and adjust treatment as necessary.

· Consults with hyperbaric physician regarding any adverse reactions.

· Documents treatment notes and maintains patient treatment/diagnostic records.

· Completes the patient’s treatment charges, if required.

· Cleans and maintains the equipment according to infection control standards.

· Maintains continuous quality improvement duties and chart audits.

· Answers telephone inquiries and schedules patient treatment times.

· Performs an inventory check and maintains a record of supplies and laundry items.

· Maintains equipment and check backup air and oxygen supplies on a daily basis.

· Reconciliation to be completed daily for the wound healing centers.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

· Minimum of High School or GED required.

· Minimum of 1 year of experience as LPN in office setting or acute care required, wound care preferred.

· Licensed as a Practical Nurse (LPN) in the State of Florida.

· Have attended or will attend an approved hyperbaric medicine introductory training course within 90 days of hire.

· Certification as a Hyperbaric Technologist or obtain certification within 18 months of hire.

· Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.

· Intermediate computer knowledge: Uses Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Windows.
