Job Description Summary

Using unique perspective and experience, the Jurist in Residence works with the Dean’s Office at Liberty University School of Law to inform and assist in various initiatives. The Jurist in Residence assists with fulfilling the law school’s mission to “…equip future leaders in law with a superior legal education…” by sharing his or her expertise with students and faculty.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Mentor students and faculty.

Collaborate with the Dean’s Office to develop and execute initiatives relative to professionalism and wellness. 

Encourage students in their pursuit of knowledge of the broader aspects of law.

Assists the Dean’s Office with nurturing a mutually beneficial relationship with the local bench and bar.

Education and Experience

J.D. Degree from an ABA accredited law school

Minimum of five years of experience serving as a circuit or district court judge

Experience teaching in legal education preferred

Commitment to student mentoring and professional development

Enthusiasm for working with law students

ABILITIES AND COMPETENCIES ESSENTIAL TO THE FUNCTION OF THE JOB

Communication and Comprehension

Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing to convey clear, well-articulated information.

Ability to understand, speak, and write English in order to convey messages and correspond in an articulate and professional manner.

Strong organizational skills.

Ability to contribute to a team environment and contribute expertise at appropriate times while recognizing each team members strengths and contributions.

Listen first communication style to ensure that everyone is heard so the best decision can be reached

Ability to show respect to their colleagues and to work in a collegial manner.

Intuitively able to reason, analyze information and events, and apply judgment in order to solve problems of both a routine and complex nature.
