Position Summary:
The SPD Specialist coordinates and collaborates the overall cleaning, decontamination, assembly and dispensing of surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies needed for daily surgical procedures in surgery and related departments throughout SCH enterprise. 

Duties/Responsibilities:
Responsible for control of all parts of the sterilization process: Decontamination; Prep, pack, sterilize;
Documentation of sterilization; and sterile storage including remediation of equipment failures and hazards; cleans and decontaminates surgical instruments and other medical equipment following established policy and procedure and instruction for use (IFU).
Provides integrity and sterility of products and services for customers.
Works in conjunction with the OR staff to provide timely sterile products.
Maintains consistency and continuous workflow between the OR and Central Service Sterile Processing while practicing excellent customer service.
Operates and maintain steris reliance machine; keep records of loads completed, items of loads and maintenance procedures performed.
Operates and maintain decontamination equipment; performs daily cleaning and validations of washer-disinfector cleaner.
Operates and maintain steam autoclaves, keeping records of loads completed, items in loads, and maintenance procedures performed.
Inspects, assembles, packages, and sterilizes medical devices following manufacturer’s recommendations/IFY and established procedure.
Monitors and maintain appropriate records to remain compliant with applicable regulatory agencies, as well as reporting occurrences immediately.
Maintains strong working /collaborative relationship with other departments to ensure flow and continuity of services. 
Attends in-service presentations, including but not limited to infection control, patient safety, quality improvement, MSDS and OSHA standards.
Reports defective equipment to department leader.
Maintains IFU records and demonstrates knowledge of accessing OneSource computer reference for updates on IFUs.
Maintains a state of “continuous hospital readiness” for accreditation ensuring all relevant standards and guidelines are implemented and maintained.

Education:
• Associate Degree in Healthcare related field preferred.

Experience: 
• Two to three years’ experience in hospital setting required. 

Licensure/Certification: 
• Certification in sterile processing required within two years of employment in this position. Potential certifications include: Certified Registered Central Services Technician (CRCST) or Certified Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD).
