Claims Adjuster

Job Description

This hybrid position offers mix of working in person at Ruan Center downtown Des Moines and remote.  Responsible for the analysis, investigation, evaluation, and resolution of workers compensation and/or auto claims.
Responsibilities: Investigate workers compensation claims or auto claims losses and damages. Interview or corresponds with claimants and witnesses. Examine photographs, surveillance video, and statements. Consult police and hospital records to determine extent of liability. Determine if there is a need for an on-site independent adjuster. Coordinate activities and monitor case until closed. Oversee the action of third-party administrator adjusters to ensure compliance with Ruan special handling instructions. Negotiate with claimant to settle claim. Recommend settlement and pay or deny claims. Recommend litigation where appropriate. Work with attorneys to defend company's position if claim is contested. Produce reports and evidence documents. May present evidence at legal proceedings. Maintain records and file required reports. Coordinate various processes such as "DOT Reportable", post-accident alcohol and drug testing, etc. Recommend loss reserve levels. Pursue subrogation and fund recoveries. Perform other job-related duties and special projects as necessary.

Requirements

Education: Bachelors Degree or equivalent work experience
Course(s) of Study: Business or related field of study; Associate in Claims designation preferred.Experience: 3-5 years Claims Experience Strong verbal and written and communication skills. Demonstrated attention to detail and sense of urgency. Strong analytical and mathematical abilities. Ability to set priorities and accomplish duties of position with minimal direction. Strong decision making and negotiation skills. Demonstrated ability to determine liability/responsibility based on various state workers' compensation laws, negligence (comparative, contributory, ; various local, state and federal laws. Ability to communicate with all levels of management personnel within the company. Willingness to maintain professional and technical knowledge through continuing education.
