Job Description:

Performs varied and complex duties involving exam preparation, performance of radiological exams, and general supportive duties within the Women's Health Resource Organization.

Preparation for exam.

Reviews daily schedule for changes. Reviews/prepares all required forms (Medicare, etc.). Reviews/obtains previous films. Reviews needle localization/stereotactic exams with a radiologist on a day prior to the exam. Evaluates information provided by referring Physicians, patients, and previous reports and determines an appropriate screening or diagnostic exam. Prepares room. Insures equipment and supplies are on hand.

Maintains high quality of patient care/customer service.

Greets patients in a timely manner. Adjusts schedule to accommodate patient's needs as necessary. Introduces oneself to patient. Introduces radiologists (i.e. needle localizations). Conducts interviews with patients. Reviews and documents all related personal history. Explains procedures to each patient. Provides reassurance, answers questions, eliminates concerns with a professional, caring attitude. Becomes a patient advocate during invasive procedures. Instructs/reviews breast self-exam techniques using video tape and/or pamphlets. Instructs/reviews ACS guidelines for breast health, screening verses diagnostic. Has a good understanding of related diagnostic tools, i.e. ultrasound, needle localizations, stereotactic, MRI, needle aspirations, etc. Reviews discharge instructions and follow up policies. Evaluates call backs and assigns the appropriate time frame.

Performs radiological exams.

Inputs all data with I.D. control. Performs standard CCs and MLOs for screening procedures. Performs a variety of advanced positioning images for diagnostic evaluation. Assists Radiologist during needle localization and stereotactic procedures. Has a good working knowledge of processing. Critiques images and all mandatory marking systems. Utilizes knowledge of anatomy and physiology as well as familiarity with a variety of pathological conditions. Exercises judgment to extend or discontinue the exam.

Provides general supportive duties.

Maintains responsibility for daily laundry and room supplies. Maintains general cleanliness of the department, i.e., waiting area, break room, exam rooms, and darkroom, etc. Performs supportive duties, i.e. unpacking films, matching and filing, routing paperwork, data input, answering phones, scheduling appointments, bring cases to Radiologists/file room, assists with transportation. Performs general radiography as needed.

Maintains high standards for quality assurance.

Responsibility for daily/weekly/monthly mandatory Q.C. with documentation, i.e. processor control, screen and darkroom cleaning, etc. Assists in training of new employees. Shares concerns, complaints, all feedback to the Supervisor to insure appropriate quality improvement plan is developed in all areas. Provides reasonable solutions to problem solving and planning with concern for others and economical consequences. Maintains responsibility for sick time, punctuality, swiping and overtime. Meets requirements to maintain a repeat rate below 5%. Follows policies and procedures. Meets fire, safety and universal precaution requirements annually.

Maintains responsibility for own professional growth and development.

Attends 66% of department staff meetings. Maintains responsibility for professional growth, i.e. ECEs, attends inservices.

Qualifications

Educational / Minimum Requirements:

High school and two years accredited program in Radiologic Technology.

Must have worked as Radiographer for one year; experience in Mammography.

State/Federal Mandated Licensure or Certification Requirements:

Licensed by State and registered by the ARRT in Mammography and Radiology.

Bristol Hospital Mandated Educational Requirements:

General orientation at time of hire. Fire/Safety/Infection Control annually. Other programs as mandated by Hospital.

Physical Requirements:

On feet most of the day with occasional lifting of 35 lbs. or less. Physical agility including but not limited to bending, stooping, walking, reaching, standing, kneeling, pulling, pushing and twisting. Hearing and sight corrected to normal. Ability to verbalize so the average person can comprehend. Manipulate radiology equipment and access patient's response to exam.

Work Environment:

Radiation exposure, patient elements, chemical fume exposure. Frequent changes in lighting levels.

Cognitive Requirements:

Excellent oral communication skills, literate in English, ability to read, comprehend and execute written and oral instructions. Good organizational and decision making skills and good writing skills.
