The Department of Neurosurgery is seeking a motivated and dedicated research associate to join our research team focused on studying degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM) on the translational research continuum. The successful candidate will work closely with a multidisciplinary team of researchers and clinicians to investigate relationships between advanced multi-parametric spinal cord magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and functional (motor, sensory, and balance function) correlates within a clinical population. This collaborative research is guided by faculty of the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) and the joint Biomedical Engineering Department at MCW and Marquette University. The ideal candidate should have a strong background in neuroscience, neurology, biomedical engineering, biophysics, computer science or a related field with expertise in medical image processing, machine learning, artificial intelligence, neuroimaging, MR imaging analysis, functional testing, statistical analysis, and a passion for translational research. This position provides an intellectually stimulating and collaborative neuroscience and biomedical engineering community with ample opportunities for career development and scientific growth. 

The Research Associate will work closely with Aditya Vedantam, MD (), Brian D. Schmit PhD (), and Matthew Budde, PhD () and will be affiliated with the MCW Center for Cervical Myelopathy ().

Primary Functions

Design and perform lab procedures and experiments with minimal supervision. Coordinate research study activities; lead and manage projects. Manage and operate lab equipment. Train new employees in lab procedures. Participate in meetings with principle investigator and research staff and evaluate/interpret the validity of data, develop methodologies, evaluate lab procedures. Retrieve information from library and computerized databases; assist in preparation of manuscripts and presentations. Introduce new techniques in lab. Maintain supplies, may negotiate with vendors, track purchase orders. Maintain equipment, perform/supervise repairs and update computer hardware and software.

Knowledge of medical image processing, machine learning, artificial intelligence, statistics, documentation, records management, data utilization, complex problem solving, critical thinking, resource management, and writing skills

Position Requirements:

Specifications

Appropriate experience may be substituted for education on an equivalent basis

Minimum Required Education: Master’s degree

Minimum Required Experience: No experience required

Preferred Education: PhD, MD/MBBS in computer science, biomedical engineering, biophysics, radiology, or a related field, or equivalent. 

Preferred Experience: Medical image processing, machine learning, artificial intelligence, scientific writing, statistical analysis, MR imaging analysis, and biomechanical functional testing. Proficiency in Python, MATLAB is preferred but not mandatory. Some clinical experience and experience with human subjects research is preferred.

Field: Computer science, biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, clinical medicine, computer science, biophysics, radiology, or related field
