Academic Writing and Study Skills Lecturer - Greenford

ROLE PURPOSE:

To be a member of the study skills team, working in close collaboration with subject lecturers to develop and teach study skills within the curriculum across a range of HE programmes from Foundation to Masters’ Level. This includes for example, improving English language and numeracy, organisational and presentation skills, digital literacy and basic IT skills, reading, writing and higher order research skills. 

To develop a range of adaptable digital resources, in partnership with students and staff, to assist learners in developing study strategies appropriate to Higher Education.

To contribute to the effective learning of students, including the development of students’ independent learning skills within a broader framework of academic support, including one-to-one consultations, targeted workshops and remote teaching.

To utilise specialist skills to teach students for whom English is not their first language those with anxieties or neurodiversity.

We also require you to be flexible to work evenings and weekends as required.

Main Responsibilities
  • To work collaboratively to teach academic literacies and digital skills and to provide assignment support, using a range of inclusive teaching methods, within the context of the GBS, as directed by the Dean and Associate Dean (Academic Support).
  • To design and document bespoke courses, digital resources, workshop plans and individual schemes of work as required to develop study skills in the curricula, ensuring current, relevant and effective skills are consistently delivered across GBS.
  • To deliver and evaluate teaching and identify areas for potential improvement, recommending these to the Dean and Associate Dean (Academic Support) in order to enhance the quality of teaching and learning, and overall student experience in accordance with the GBS’s Learning and Teaching strategy
  • To maintain accurate records in accordance with GBS requirements, ensuring compliance and maintenance of relevant systems, including monitoring student attendance.  
  • To participate in, and occasionally lead, CPD in order to maintain currency across the teams in specialist areas and in inclusive teaching practices.
  • To provide feedback on individual and class progress in their understanding of academic writing and other relevant study skills. 
  • To provide tutorial consultations with students, working closely with students’ assignments to provide constructive comments that are reactive to the individual student need; to explain where work fails to meet assessment criteria and to suggest ways for students to improve their work / working practices. 
  • To record details from these appointments for statistical, evaluation and quality purposes, and to refer students to other services as appropriate. 
  • To effectively engage with VLE and research resources and facilitate students’ learning by means of engagement with online resources and activities.

Student Experience 

  • To contribute to the enhancement of the student experience through effective delivery of specialist responsibilities in order to meet student expectations, and to support recruitment, retention and progression, and the GBS brand. 
  • To promote high levels of student performance in accordance with GBS strategic aims and objectives regarding the student experience. 
  • To represent the GBS as directed from time to time in order to enhance the support to students and ensure the GBS achieves its strategic objectives. 
  • To engage with the wider GBS to support and represent the activities of the Learning and Teaching Department. 

Planning & Organisation 

  • To carry out the administration and organisation of course contributions, materials production, bespoke courses, group workshops and individual or group tutorials.
  • To contribute to GBS quality assurance systems and processes.
  • To work with academic teams / working groups to support the achievement of academic and project objectives as may be required. 
  • To engage / comply with staff management processes, e.g.  GBS Performance processes
  • To maintain information and documentation on the delivery of duties as required.
  • To identify and implement improvements to the framework for Academic Support, taking account of student and staff feedback, changes to policy, strategy or the external environment
Requirements

Essential

  • Postgraduate teaching qualification (e.g. Higher Education teaching)
  • Successful track record of teaching adult learners from diverse backgrounds on HE programmes
  • Proven experience of providing individual and group study skills support in response to identified learning needs
  • Willingness to lead a specific area of literacy development, such as reading, writing, critical thinking, numeracy, digital skills, research skills (quantitative or qualitative), project and dissertation support, peer-assisted learning;
  • High level of digital literacy and advanced communication skills

Desirable

  • Expertise in digital educational resources development
  • Course design and curriculum development experience
  • DELTA qualification or Advance HE Fellowship
