Psychiatric Registered Nurse (RN) Job Description

Position Overview:

We are seeking an experienced and compassionate Psychiatric Registered Nurse (RN) to join our dynamic team in providing quality care to patients with mental health and behavioral disorders. The ideal candidate must have at least 3 years of clinical nursing experience, particularly in psychiatric or behavioral health settings. Certification in Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) is required for this role to ensure the safety and well-being of both patients and staff.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Patient Care & Assessment:
    Conduct comprehensive psychiatric assessments and develop individualized care plans for patients with mental health conditions. Monitor patient behavior, mental status, and response to treatment.

  • Medication Administration & Monitoring:
    Administer prescribed medications and closely monitor patients for side effects, therapeutic response, and medication compliance.

  • Crisis Intervention:
    Provide immediate and effective intervention during psychiatric crises using de-escalation techniques, including those learned in Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) training.

  • Collaboration:
    Work collaboratively with psychiatrists, social workers, therapists, and other healthcare providers to ensure a holistic and integrated approach to patient care.

  • Documentation & Reporting:
    Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records in accordance with healthcare regulations. Document all nursing actions, including assessments, interventions, and patient responses.

  • Patient Education & Support:
    Educate patients and their families about mental health conditions, treatment plans, and coping strategies to promote long-term recovery and wellness.

  • Safety & Compliance:
    Ensure adherence to all safety protocols and hospital policies, including maintaining a safe environment for both patients and staff. Follow infection control practices, confidentiality guidelines, and regulatory standards.

  • Crisis Management:
    Actively participate in emergency situations, providing critical interventions while maintaining patient dignity and safety. CPI training will be used to manage and prevent potentially dangerous situations effectively.

Qualifications:

  • Experience:
    Minimum of 3 years of clinical nursing experience in psychiatric or mental health settings. Experience in acute care psychiatric settings is preferred.

  • Certifications:
    Current and valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in [state].
    Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) certification required (or ability to obtain within a specified time frame).

  • Skills & Competencies:

    • Strong knowledge of psychiatric nursing practices, including medication management, psychiatric assessments, and treatment plans.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
    • Ability to manage challenging behavior and handle crises in a calm, effective manner.
    • Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-stress environment while maintaining focus on patient care.

  • Physical Requirements:
    Must be able to lift, carry, and assist patients as needed. The role may involve standing for extended periods, walking, and providing physical assistance during patient interventions.
