Responsibilities*

Key Responsibilities of the AES CND include:

Plan, counsel, and evaluate the performance and clinical practice for a team of FTE RN, 5.0 FTE clinical nursing supervisors, 4.0 FTE ENCs, and 14 FTE ED techs. Establish and ensure compliance for AES standards of nursing practice. Establish minimum/maximum staffing patterns that are consistent with care requirements, respond to varying patient activity and acuity and ensure high-quality, safe patient care. Identify and recommend specific staffing needs and position qualifications consistent with AES objectives and patient case mix. Interview and select qualified personnel. Oversee staff development and unit orientation programs to ensure compliance with practice standards. Direct the planning, development, and implementation of unit policies, goals, objectives in collaboration with the AES Triad Participate in concurrent and retrospective evaluation of AES patient care. Evaluate, recommend, and implement changes and improvements. Actively collaborate in the development of annual budgets including activity, payroll, commodity, capital, and revenue. Project and monitor personnel budget for nursing and tech staff. Identify and resolve unit operational concerns. Provide essential coordination between patient care units within the organizational structure of Nursing Services. Represent AES on health-system committees. Maintain compliance with federal and state regulations, and accreditation standards including CMS, TJC and other regulatory bodies. Facilitate/lead new program development & implementation. Advise and assist with the establishment of priorities and institutional program development. Assist in the resolution of interdisciplinary, interdepartmental operating challenges. Interpret and implement University and hospital personnel policies and programs and ensure their uniform and correct application. Facilitate, coordinate, and monitor the clinical experience of nursing and other students. Initiate and cooperate in health care research in keeping with the institutional objectives of maintaining prominence in developing new modes of clinical practice.

Supervision Exercised: Direct supervision of Clinical Nursing Supervisors, ENCs, Professional Nursing staff, ED Techs

Supervision Received: Direct supervision is received from the Associate Chief Nursing Officer (ACNO) Medical, Emergency and Psychiatry Services

Required Qualifications*

Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan.  Master's degree in Nursing or Health Care Administration, Public Health, Business, or related field (a Juris Doctor degree may be considered). If Master's degree is not in Nursing, a Bachelor's degree in Nursing is required. Two years recent leadership experience, to include demonstrated leadership, management, communication, counseling, problem solving, decision making, conflict resolution and group process skills. Minimum of five years of nursing experience with demonstration of progressive clinical competence.  Nurse Leadership certification or completion of a nursing leadership certification within one year of accepting this position or when eligible to certify, whichever comes first. Certification is expected to be maintained while in this leadership role. Examples include Certified Nurse Manager and Leader (CNML) or, Nurse Executive (NE-BC). The nursing leadership certification must be recognized by the Magnet Recognition Program and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Current TNCC, ACLS, PALS certification

Desired Qualifications*

Two years recent supervisory experience in Emergency Department (ED) setting is highly desired. Minimum of five years of nursing experience with demonstration of progressive clinical competence in ED setting.  Recent experience in nursing management in a tertiary care setting, desired Demonstrated ability to assess, interpret, analyze and advance nursing practice in ED setting independently and collaboratively. Demonstrated leadership and management skills including personnel management and the ability to perform as a role model for Nursing Staff.  Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills.  Demonstrated ability to collaborate in a manner that fosters teambuilding and provides visionary direction for team members. Experience with change management process. Evidence of successful implementation of initiatives positively impacting and improving patient care outcomes. Demonstrated ability to coach, encourage and support a positive work environment. Experience with interest-based problem-solving and negotiations.  Expertise and familiarity with High Reliability Organization Skills training. Expertise in emergency care nursing initiatives. Experience/training in disaster preparedness.

Work Schedule

Hours: 40 hours/week
Shift: Shift and hours will vary based on unit needs
Location: University Hospital, Adult Emergency Services-Level 1 Trauma Center
