Overview

The Charge Nurse is accountable for excellence in the clinical practice of nursing and the delivery of patient care. He/She directs and oversees function and activities of the assigned unit. He/She recommends, develops and implements policies, procedures, standards and regulations for personnel, patients, medical staff and the public. He/She assumes the duties of the Director in his/her absence.

The Charge Nurse reports directly to the CCU Director.

Responsibilities

1. Demonstrates the knowledge of needs and task for the Critical Care Unit patients. Provides leadership for the unit by organizing and prioritizing care by communicating and collaborating with others and implementing multidisciplinary actions to provide a continuity of care.

2. Holds self and other staff members accountable and responsible for work performance and continuous improvement.

3. Ensures self-compliance with professional, regulatory and government standards of care.

4. Assists the director in the management of the Critical Care Unit, by performing: evaluations, schedules and education.

5. Participates in committee and task force functions as assigned specific to unit or hospital wide.

6. Ensures the satisfactory completion of clinical procedures, documentation, educational and procedural teaching of the patient.

7. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

1. Education:
RN graduate of Accredited School of Nursing.
Prefer BSN.

2. Licensure/Certification:
Must have a valid, current license by the Missouri State Board of Nursing.
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification/Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required.
ACLS.
PALS required.
TNCC or TNS required.

3. Work Experience:
Successful completion of hospital orientation.
Minimum one-year experience as a staff nurse preferred.
