Position Summary:
The Cancer Coder Abstractor will obtain cancer information through reporting and chart review. I dentify people that have been diagnosed with cancer and determine whether such information is reportable by law. Data is collected in several areas, including demographics, tumor characteristics, stage of disease, treatment, and outcomes. Data is disseminated on local, state, and national levels. Data is analyzed for quality, including accuracy, completeness, reliability, relevance, and timeliness. Data audits are conducted and communicated to internal stakeholders.
Education, License/Certification:
Individuals currently credentialed through National Cancer Registrars Association (NCRA) with CTR (Certified Tumor Registrar) OR Individuals with Associate’s degree or 60 college credit hours including Medical terminology, Anatomy/Physiology, and Healthcare Technology and Information Systems courses OR Individuals currently working in the medical field holding other licenses or certifications. Some college credit hours preferred. Must complete the required 60 college credit hours or equivalent per NCRA requirement and pass the CTR exam through NCRA within 3 years from date of hire. Must obtain Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) certification through the NCRA within 3 years from date of hire. Must maintain required annual memberships through NCRA, PACR and NYCRA upon hire.Experience:
Strong dedication to high quality work and integrity of data. Strong conceptual, as well as quantitative and qualitative analytic skills. Excellent oral and written communication. Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team. Proficiency in anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology. Proficiency with MS excel. Preferred- knowledge of reportable malignant and non-malignant diseases, cancer staging and treatment, ICD-O-3 coding. Preferred-EPIC experience. Preferred-data analysis experience.
Essential Functions:
Create and use excel spreadsheets with large amounts of data. Ensure data integrity; Perform quality control activities on registry data. Following established guidelines, manuals, and definitions as defined by The American College of Surgeons-Commission on Cancer (ACoS CoC). Pennsylvania (PACR) and New York State (NYCRA) Cancer Registries, Epidemiology and End Results Program (SEER), International Classification of diseases in Oncology (ICD-O), American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC), North America Association of Central Registries (NAACR) and additional standard setters for inclusion in a comprehensive data base. Identify patients with malignant and non-malignant, reportable disease processes according to departmental case finding mechanisms. Analyze patient’s cancer data and perform abstraction and coding through consolidation of best information from all available sources on demographics, diagnostic information, primary cancer site, histology, tumor characteristics, extent of disease and treatments. Research patient’s cancer data for residual disease, recurrence, or additional malignancies to maintain required follow up rates as established by the CoC. Adheres to reporting guidelines of the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer for inclusion in the National Cancer Database (NCDB) and State Registries of Pennsylvania (PACR) and New York (NYCRA). Ensure timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual reports. 8. Establish, maintain, and update databases and records for internal reports. 9. Recommend and implement new operating methods to improve data collection, analysis, and distribution. 10. Attend and participate in local, regional, state, and national educational programs as required.Other Duties:
