Under the general direction of the Dean of the Delaplaine School of Business, we invite applications for the Delaplaine/Maryland Endowed Chair in Business and Project Management in the George B. Delaplaine Jr. School of Business (DSB) at Hood College. This full-time, one year visiting position (renewable for an additional year), beginning August 1, 2024, requires candidates to possess an earned doctorate degree in entrepreneurship and/or innovation management, project management or a related field.

Additionally, this position requires some practical experience in program or project management in either public-sector, information technology, health sciences, or the life sciences fields. The position has the option to be renewed for a second year based on satisfactory performance in the first year. Academic Rank for this position will commensurate with the academic experience of the candidate.

The teaching assignment will feature course delivery at the graduate and undergraduate level in management topics such as innovation management, entrepreneurship, social entrepreneurship, strategy management, and introduction to management. The selected candidate will be required to successfully plan for institutional delivery, design, and implement formative and summative assessments for students at various levels. Preference will be given to applicants with a proven record of contributions to professional publications, including practitioner-oriented materials or academic journals, particularly in the domains of entrepreneurship, innovation management and project management.

In line with the endowed position, the candidate will provide a minimum of 8 hours per week on average to supporting the DSB-based project management initiatives including:

Collaborating on teams partnering with the regional business community, lead start-ups and established companies to transfer business and project management best practices, and to integrate the work of various centers located in the DSB. Under the guidance of the DSB Dean, collaborating with regional partners as a bridge between organizations to fulfill partnership activities defined in MOU agreements. These include supporting annual research symposia and faculty exchanges, organizing specialized workshops and conferences, and serving as a working member of joint planning committees. Supporting the DSB in its outreach and support of local and regional businesses and organizations through activities including providing outreach and education services on project management and data-driven decision making, supporting the awareness of available datasets and tools, and fostering meaningful and beneficial connections between organizations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities are listed below. Other duties may be assigned as per the needs of the institution.

Teaching and Program Facilitation (60%)

Demonstrate an ability/potential for quality teaching, scholarship, and service consistent with expectations of an endowed chair position. Per annual teaching load requirements outlined in the Faculty Code, teach undergraduate and graduate courses by successfully planning for institutional delivery, design, and implement formative and summative assessments. Courses may include Innovation Management, Project Management, Entrepreneurship, Social Entrepreneurship, Management Theory; Organizational Behavior; Organizational Sustainability; and Strategy & Competitive Advantage. In consultation with the Dean, develop new courses based on assessment of regional needs and areas of expertise. Plan course syllabi/assignments to meet Hood College and the DSB curriculum requirements utilizing a variety of teaching techniques. Evaluate students’ needs to determine suitable level of instruction and assignments. Instruct students in course content and provide learning opportunities in and out of the classroom to achieve program objectives. Critique student performance on various assignments to measure the quality of learning, build thinking skills, challenge students’ assumptions, and reinforce concepts to include practical application of new skills. Maintain regular office hours and provide opportunities to informally mentor students to encourage their development as scholar practitioners. Determine grades for assignments and for overall achievement in class. Provide appropriate documentation of grades to students and the DSB as required. Utilize digital and electronic platforms such as Blackboard and Chalk & Wire for instruction, record keeping, and data collection purposes. Explore future leadership opportunities with the program. Support the DSB based initiatives and related strategic goals of the College. Other job-related duties as assigned.

Research, Professional Development and Scholarship (20%)

Conduct appropriate field research and professional development to enhance general body of knowledge and provide publication opportunities. Present research and other academic papers at professional conferences. Collaborate with masters’ and doctoral candidates to support appropriate public dissemination at conferences, professional meetings, publications, and other appropriate venues.

Service (20%) 

Lead and oversee project management certificate program at DSB. Serve as an advisor for thesis and doctoral candidates. Advise undergraduate, masters, and doctoral students. Support and participate in the DSB committees. Support and participate in professional and community organizations. Support the DSB initiatives by enhancing collaboration with appropriate organizations and community groups. Function as an active member of the DSB and Hood College community. Per the terms of the endowment, spend the equivalent of at least one day per week (20%) working in partnership with a wide variety of local governmental agencies, non-profit organizations, and for-profit businesses.

Education and/or Experience

Minimum Requirements/Qualifications

Earned doctorate degree with experience and expertise in innovation management, entrepreneurship, project management, or related field, experience in successful higher education instruction or combination of education and experience. A minimum of five years’ college teaching experience is preferred. Evidence of leadership within higher education and professional organizations, and success building mutually beneficial partnerships.

Technology Skills

Proficient in office productivity suite software, e-mail, and Internet sources. Ability to use a variety of digital and electronic devices, programs, and resources to instruct.

Language Skills

Proficient in communication in the English language and ability to assist students with English as a secondary language. Ability to read and interpret documents such as research studies, administrative policies, journals, newspapers, etc. Ability to write lesson plans, respond to e-mail messages, create routine reports and correspondence, speak effectively before groups.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or scheduled form; ability to work independently and as a member of a group in developing and executing plans; and ability to work in theoretical arena and apply logic as appropriate.
