This person will conduct research and analysis related to climate and energy policy. The ideal candidate will have strong writing and research skills, a keen attention to detail, a commitment to addressing climate change and economic and environmental injustice, and a willingness to work on a wide range of policy issues.

This position reports to the Senior Director of Domestic Climate and Energy Policy.

The successful candidate will be driven by American Progress’ mission to improve the lives of all Americans, through bold, progressive ideas, as well as strong leadership and concerted action, with the aim of not only changing the conversation, but changing the country. The Policy Analyst will be part of a dynamic department that supports work across American Progress’ five crosscutting priorities:

Building an economy for all Restoring social trust in democracy Advancing racial equity and justice Tackling climate change and environmental injustice Strengthening health

Responsibilities:

Conduct and support research on climate and energy policy issues for the Domestic Climate team, including performing literature reviews; meeting with stakeholders; and drafting, proofreading, fact-checking, and editing documents. Develop a range of written products—including memos, reports, fact sheets, statements, and social media posts—to influence the policy debate on key climate issues. Provide data analysis, data visualizations, and research support across the Energy and Environment department, as needed. Engage in rapid-response research and writing in response to policy developments. Represent American Progress in external meetings with coalition partners and government staff to advance the organization’s work. May represent American Progress in interviews, social media, podcasts, and press engagements, as needed. Perform administrative duties, such as helping track publications and timelines, coordinating meetings and events, note-taking, and managing meeting calendars. Help embody a culture of justice, equity, and inclusion by performing tasks with these values at their core. Develop and maintain expertise in assigned areas of responsibility. Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements and qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree or experience in a relevant field is required. At least four years of relevant professional and/or educational experience is required. This can include internships, activist roles, or other positions. Graduate studies count toward the four-year requirement, and volunteer experience may be considered. Research and analytical skills, including data analysis and presentation are required, as are attention to detail and the ability to digest and summarize technical and policy reports. Proficient in written and verbal communication, including the ability to communicate policy matters to a nonpolicy audience, and willingness to learn how to tailor messages to diverse audiences to achieve effective advocacy outcomes. Ability to independently plan ahead, prioritize, allocate time, balance projects, and coordinate with internal and external partners. Willingness to take ownership over independent projects. Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines in a team setting. Commitment to treating all partners, internal and external, with courtesy and to respecting those of different cultural backgrounds. Commitment to American Progress’ mission and goals, in particular progressive values, and an understanding and willingness to learn how environmental issues intersect with racism and economic and social inequality.
