POSITIONSUMMARY

Reports to the InpatientManager. Performs professional nursing duties in the care of women and newborn patientsin the obstetric, women’s health department and emergency room settings in thehospital, based on validated competencies achieve while working in a low riskOB setting. Will work in Inpatient andER as needed.

PRINCIPALDUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1.Initiates and utilizes the nursing process to meet the holisticneeds of the patient and family while adhering to the professional standardsset forth by American Nurses’ Association.

2.Observes the patients clinical condition: recognizes, identifies,and interprets serious and/or emergent situations while initiating appropriatenursing interventions. Proficient knowledgeof EFM, care of laboring patient, medication administration, monitoring ofpatients during self-administration of nitrous oxide, newborn care, and postpartumcare.

3.Works with Inpatient Manager and Labor& Delivery Registered Nurse to provide Labor & Delivery (L & D)coverage when needed.

4.Develops and implements patient/family teaching programs base onmutually identified health care goals.

5.Documents all observations, nursing interventions, therapeuticmeasures administered, and status of coordinated activities between nursing andother professional disciplines.

6.Evaluates the patient’s plan of care and revises plan as needed.

7.Safeguards the patient’s right to privacy by judiciouslyprotecting information of a confidential manner.

8.Understands the developmental needs of all patients throughout thecontinuum of life; is able to adjust care to these needs; and documentationreflects this understanding. Demonstrates teamwork by assisting with patientcare within their skill sets outside of L&D.

9.Assumes responsibility and accountability for individual nursingjudgments and actions.

10.Provides guidance and leadership to other personnel in the form ofin-service and orientation/preceptorship and participates in committeeactivities.

11.Participates in departmental and organizational performanceimprovement activities.

12.Utilizes incident and medication error reporting protocols per MHCpolicies.

13.Participates in continuing education activities associated withLabor & Delivery.

14.Facilitates patient care across multiple disciplines, departments,and other non-MHC agencies through referrals and other business operations.

15.Performs daily SQSS tasks and records in system as assigned.Performs daily/weekly controls for laboratory testing.

16.Schedules or assignments may be changed to meet the needs of thedepartment.

17.Provides guidance to support staff to include PCTs and AA. Assistsproviders as needed.

18.Embraces the MHC customer service model, providing a positivecustomer service attitude at all times.

19. Will work in Inpatient andER as needed. Job Qualifications:

MINIMUMREQUIREMENTS

AssociateDegree in Nursing from an Accredited College. Must have RN licensein good standing and be eligible to apply for an Alaska licensure as aRegistered Nurse. Postpartum andNewborn Nursery experience preferred, with willingness to train in Med Surg or ED.BLS required.NRP, ACLS, PALS preferred within 6 months of hire.ALSO and STABLE preferred within 6 months.Electronic Fetal Monitoring class within 1 year of hire. Must completeassigned AVADE training preferred within 1 year of hire as classes are madeavailable.Ability to lift up to 50 poundsand spend long periods of time standing or walking. May be exposed tocommunicable diseases and hazardous materials. Must be able to pass the annualcore competencies assigned to the unit.
