SUMMARY: 

OBI Seafoods is looking for energetic, hardworking people to join our team at our Kodiak, Seward, Cordova, and Petersburg production facilities. We are now accepting applications for 2024 Summer season. Duties include: Process crab, multiple species of finfish, bottom fish and salmon. Work on hand butcher line. Use hand and hand tools to perform routine cutting and trimming. Wash, size and grade the seafood; load the processed seafood onto freezer baskets and into cartons for shipping in a cold and wet environment. The season will start May 15th and run through October 31st.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Processing employees will process raw seafood products at our land-based processing plant(s) in Alaska. Duties include sorting, butchering, cleaning, weighing, and packing salmon. May also include guiding product into automated machinery and cleaning or sanitizing the work area. Other duties may also be assigned.  The work environment may be cold, wet, and noisy, and will require the employee to work repetitively with hands, wrists, and elbows while standing for up to 16 hours per day, seven days a week.  All OBI Seafoods employees are required to wear protective safety gear and are responsible for promoting and maintaining a safe working environment for and others.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Must be 18 years of age or older. Must have a basic understanding of the English language, including the ability to follow written and/or verbal instructions. Processing employees must be able to walk quickly to designated areas in the event of emergency and must be able to follow emergency instructions.  Able to work with seafood, including various types of fish and shellfish. Able to lift to 50 pounds repeatedly throughout the work shift. Must follow all directions and adhere to work rules.  Must be willing and able to work with other departments in a team atmosphere.  Must be physically and mentally able to work and live in confined quarters in a multi-cultural environment. Prompt and reliable attendance is an essential function of this job.  Able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.

COMPENSATION:

This is an hourly position that is eligible for overtime pay. In Alaska, overtime is one- and one-half times the regular hourly rate and is paid for hours worked over 8 hours in a day and after 40 hours are worked in a week. Travel to and from the plant in Alaska is provided.

Employer will offer minimum 35 hours of work per week - depending of fish harvest and production demands. Overtime possible of 40 hours or more per week. Extensive overtime is frequently required with total workdays up to 16 hours. Seafood Plants are open 7 days a week, workdays vary Sunday through Saturday. Rotating schedule, shift times 6AM-6PM, 6PM-6AM. Workdays and shift times will vary with seafood deliveries and other factors.

Employee-shared housing, including utilities, is available at no cost to employee. Optional meals during shift are available for $15 per day if employee works at least 8 hours in that day, payroll deducted if worker elects. Employees with 4+ years of seniority with the company are exempt from meal deduction if work over 8 hours per day. Daily transportation provided between employee housing and worksite at no cost to employee.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort:

Work involves daily exposure to unusual elements such as dirt, dust, fumes, extreme temperatures, humidity, darkness, and/or noise. Work environment involves daily exposure to unusual risks, such as working around mechanical, chemical, and electrical hazards. Position requires the ability to stand, sit at a desk, walking around the office and plant, lifting and carrying packages up to 50 pounds, utilizing fine dexterity. Requires reaching, kneeling, crawling, and twisting to inspect equipment. Also requires the ability to see, hear, and communicate with associates as well as others by utilizing professional etiquette. Personal protection equipment, as defined by OBI Seafoods, will be provided. Position will be exposed to different levels of stress and responsibilities.
