Position Overview

The College Counselor at The Highlands School serves as a vital member of the academic team, providing comprehensive guidance and support to high school students as they navigate the college application process. At The Highlands School, we are committed to fostering holistic development, academic excellence, and spiritual growth. The College Counselor plays a pivotal role in assisting students in identifying and pursuing post-secondary education opportunities that align with their academic goals, personal interests, and values.

Responsibilities:

1. Individualized Counseling: Provide one-on-one counseling to students and families, offering personalized guidance throughout the college search, application, and decision-making process.

2. College Exploration: Facilitate workshops, presentations, and information sessions to educate students about various college options, admission requirements, financial aid opportunities, and career pathways.

3. Application Assistance: Assist students in preparing college applications, including essay writing, resume building, and completing necessary forms.

4. Standardized Testing Support: Provide guidance on standardized testing (SAT, ACT, etc.), including test preparation strategies, registration assistance, and score interpretation.

5. Financial Aid Advising: Educate students and families about financial aid options, scholarships, grants, and other resources to make higher education more accessible.

6. College Visits and Interviews: Coordinate college visits, virtual tours, and interviews to help students gain firsthand experience of campus life and culture.

7. Maintain Records: Maintain accurate records of student transcripts, test scores, letters of recommendation, and other relevant documents necessary for college applications.

8. Collaboration: Collaborate with faculty, administration, and other stakeholders to develop college-preparatory curriculum, organize college fairs, and integrate college readiness initiatives into the school culture.

Qualifications :

· Bachelor’s degree in counseling, education, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).

· At least three years previous experience in college counseling, admissions, or related fields. Knowledge of college admissions processes, including familiarity with different types of institutions, application platforms, and financial aid resources.

· Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build rapport and establish trust with students and families.

· Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

· Commitment to the mission and values of our Catholic school community.

· Demonstrated cultural competence and sensitivity to the diverse backgrounds and experiences of students.
