Job Description

The Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry (ODAFF) is seeking a full time Director of Laboratory Services in the Executive Office. This position (PIN #04000523) is in state government, located in Oklahoma City, OK. The State of Oklahoma offers a comprehensive , including a generous benefit allowance to offset the cost of insurance premiums for employees and their eligible dependents. 

The hourly pay for this position is up to $50.96 based on education and experience.

Position Description: This position will be responsible for planning, organizing, and directing the Laboratory Services Division. This position is a supervisory position that reports directly to the Agency Director.

Typical Functions:

Oversees the Laboratory Services Division, including establishing overall direction for the Division and its programs by setting goals and objectives.

Coordinates strategic program planning for the Laboratory and evaluates Division operations and programs and recommends improvements.

Oversees the development of policies and procedures for the Division’s operations and programs.

Develops and directs programs for ensuring compliance with state and federal rules regulating various laboratory certifications and accreditations.

Directs the development and review of the Division’s operations and personnel budgets.

Ensures all Laboratory sections adhere to good laboratory practices. Investigates and makes determinations on personnel work complaints.

Represent the Agency or the State at public and intergovernmental meetings concerning the Laboratory Services Division

Level Description: At this level employees are assigned responsibilities which involve overall responsibility for performing administrative and managerial work in organizing and directing a major division related to the development, regulation, enforcement and operation of the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food, and Forestry. Direction will be provided to program managers and assigned staff in establishing and meeting goals and objectives and insuring compliance with existing laws and standards.

Education and Experience: at this level includes a Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biological sciences, physical sciences, mathematics, or a closely related field and three years of experience in laboratory management plus seven years of experience in a supervisory capacity, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. No substitution will be allowed for the required supervisory or administrative experience.

Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities: Required at this level include knowledge and basic understanding of the requirements of the programs and clients that are served by the Laboratory Services Division; laboratory safety principles; quality management principles and procedures; and of supervisory principles and practices. Ability is required to manage programs and personnel; to interpret state and federal laws; to prepare and develop training programs; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; to write technical reports; to supervise and direct the work of others; to analyze and resolve highly complex administrative and personnel problems; ability to direct multiple services and activities related to analytical services

Physical Demands and Work Environment: This position is primarily in an indoor setting and requires moving throughout the laboratory to use laboratory equipment and personal computer. Exposure to potentially hazardous chemicals is possible. Infrequent travel both in state and out of state is required; infrequent weekend and overnight stays may be required.
