ABOUT THE JOB:
Summary:
This position delivers limited respiratory care support services under the supervision of an individual who holds a certificate issued under the Texas Civil Statues, Article 45121 assisting in providing care to patients and their families. The extern program also provides educational opportunities related to pediatric respiratory care.

Responsibilities:
* Provides direct care to patients on inpatient units under the supervision of a licensed respiratory care practitioner (RCP), including: aerosol therapy, CPT, MDI, suctioning, oxygen therapy, pulse oximetry, incentive spirometry, plan of care, patient education, and set-up of respiratory equipment.
* Recognize and communicate changes in patient condition or when to seek a licensed RCP
* Assist in maintaining the adequacy, orderliness, and safety of the unit's enviroment, equipment, and supplies.
* Participate in the activities of the unit, including meetings, in-services, and continuing education at the direction of the licensed RCP, Team Leader, or Clinical Manager
* Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
* The Extern will not perform procedures that are prohibited by the Texas Department of Health and Children's policies.

EDUCATION
* Current enrollment in the final year of an associates, bachelors, or masters accredited respiratory care program Req
* At least 1 year respiratory training in an accredited program Req
* Completion or scheduled completion of the pediatric clinical portion of accredited program prior to completion of the didactic portion of the externship program Req

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
* Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers as required by CP 1.20 Life Support Course Requirements Req
