Position Overview:

A Cath Lab Registered Nurse, also known as a Cardiac Catheterization Lab Nurse, is responsible for providing specialized nursing care to patients undergoing cardiac catheterization and other cardiovascular procedures. They work closely with cardiologists and other healthcare professionals to assist in diagnostic and interventional cardiac procedures.

Overview of Responsibilities:

  • Patient Assessment and Monitoring: Assess patients' cardiovascular health, review medical histories, and perform pre-procedure assessments. Monitor patients' vital signs, electrocardiograms (EKGs), and oxygen levels during procedures. Recognize and respond to any changes or complications promptly.
  • Procedure Assistance: Assist cardiologists and other healthcare professionals during cardiac catheterization procedures, angioplasty, stent placement, and other interventions. Prepare and maintain the sterile field, handle catheters and other instruments, and monitor patients' hemodynamic status.
  • Medication Administration: Administer medications as prescribed, including sedation, analgesics, and anticoagulants. Monitor patients' responses to medications and manage any adverse reactions or complications.
  • Documentation and Charting: Maintain accurate and detailed records of patient assessments, procedures performed, medications administered, and any observed complications. Ensure compliance with documentation standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Patient Education and Support: Educate patients and their families about cardiac procedures, expected outcomes, and post-procedure care instructions. Provide emotional support, address patients' concerns, and answer questions related to the procedure and recovery.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Collaborate with cardiologists, radiologic technologists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure coordinated patient care. Communicate effectively to provide updates on patients' conditions, procedural findings, and any immediate interventions required.
  • Emergency Response: Recognize and respond to cardiac emergencies during procedures, such as arrhythmias, cardiac arrest, or hypotension. Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) or assist in advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) procedures as necessary.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Graduation from an accredited nursing program and current registered nurse (RN) license.
  • Prior experience in a cardiac care setting, such as a cardiac catheterization lab, critical care, or cardiac telemetry, is preferred.
  • Knowledge of cardiovascular anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology.
  • Proficiency in interpreting cardiac monitoring, EKGs, and hemodynamic data.
  • Familiarity with cardiac medications, including sedatives, vasopressors, and anticoagulants.
  • Strong critical thinking and decision-making skills in high-pressure situations.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with the healthcare team and educate patients.
  • Ability to work well in a fast-paced environment and prioritize patient needs.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including on-call shifts and occasional weekends or holidays.
