South Mountain Community College (SMCC) reflects the diversity of the surrounding community, a rich mix of rural, urban, and suburban neighborhoods. Many of our students arrive from Phoenix, Laveen, Tempe, Guadalupe, and the surrounding area to attend classes at the main campus or our offsite facility in Guadalupe; we also offer evening courses in Laveen at Betty Fairfax High School.

Of the approximately 5,000 students enrolled at SMCC nearly 70 percent were first-generation college students and 48 percent intended to transfer to a university to further their education. Job Summary

South Mountain Community College (SMCC) is seeking to hire a Residential Psychology Faculty member within the Communication, Fine Arts, and Social Sciences Division (CFASS). The ideal candidate will have expertise in teaching Introduction to Psychology. The ideal candidate will also have expertise in another field such as Statistics in Psychological Research, Psychology and Culture, Developmental Psychology, Psychological Disorders, Social Psychology, Psychology of Personality, Psychology of Human Sexuality, or Biopsychology. SMCC is a Hispanic-serving and Minority-serving institute. In additional to instructional excellence, the ideal candidate will demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of community college students from diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural/ethnic, sex/gender backgrounds and abilities. Those from historically marginalized and/or underrepresented identities are strongly encouraged to apply. To best serve the needs of the students, this position requires teaching in-person courses, with the possibility of online teaching. To best serve the needs of the division and the college, this position requires in-person instruction, active participation in division and college-wide service, and the ability to work well with students and colleagues.

Essential Functions

Teaches a diverse population of students by incorporating multiple methods of instruction and assessment into a classroom and/or lab setting, online or hybrid, accelerated, and/or other alternative schedules and formats. Develops written syllabi/course materials; evaluates student knowledge of subject matter taught; maintains course grades; prepares and grades exams and other assignments; maintains office hours to assist and advise students. Develops curriculum and enhances pedagogical skills required to remain current with new trends and developments in the field of Psychology; engages in various forms of professional development; enhances knowledge of subject matter taught. Participates in courses and college-wide learning outcome assessments; participates in developing new courses within the division and district; participates in Division, Campus and District-wide committees and activities; performs related duties commensurate to the level of the position. Demonstrates the ability to work well and represent the role of faculty with a diverse population of administrators, faculty, staff, students, and the public.

Minimum Qualifications

A Master’s degree or higher in Psychology

Or

A Master’s degree in any field with 18 graduate-level credits in these prefixes/subjects (PSY, PSYC, PSYCH)

Or

A Master’s degree in any teaching field with Education, with a minimum of eighteen (18) graduate semester hours in a Psychology Area (see list of acceptable disciplines below) 

Acceptable disciplines and coursework include but are not limited to: 

Animal research, human research, research methods, statistics, social sciences, individual group behavior, development of human behavior, cognitive sciences, behavioral sciences, behavior analysis, neuroscience, brain and behavior, psychological disorders, psychopathology, developmental disorders, behavioral disorders, human factors, human engineering, sensation perception

Desired Qualifications

A. A doctorate in Psychology
B. Two or more years experience teaching Introduction to Psychology in a community college setting.
C. Two or more years teaching experience and/or evidence of sufficient preparation to teach one or more specialized
Psychology courses at the undergraduate level, such as: Introduction to Statistics, Psychology and Culture, Developmental
Psychology, Psychological Disorders, Social Psychology, Psychology of Personality, Psychology of Human Sexuality, or
Biopsychology.
D. Knowledge and utilization of innovative assessment strategies to enhance student learning and to improve instruction
E. Knowledge and utilization of innovative pedagogical practices that positively impact student success.
F. Knowledge and utilization of strategies to facilitate the academic success of individuals of diverse abilities and
backgrounds, particularly those from under-represented populations.

Special Working Conditions

May be required to travel or be assigned to all MCCCD locations. May be required to work evenings and weekends. May require prolonged periods of sitting and viewing a computer screen. May be required to lift or carry up to 25 lbs. This position requires a physical presence on campus with possible partial online or remote teaching and service, depending on college needs to best serve the students, division, and college. This position is scheduled to start August 2024.
