Overview:

The Multifunctional Equipment Integration Group in the Building and Transportation Science Division (BTSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking qualified candidates to fill a Post-Doctoral researcher position. The work in this group supports the U.S. DOE Building Technology Office and other DOE/EERE offices by developing state-of-the-art equipment for energy efficiency, decarbonization, renewable energy, and sustainability.

Major Duties / Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting, coordinating, and reporting complex research assignments related to energy conversion systems including: Prototype development Material synthesis and analysis Performance testing Analysis of results Preparing research publications Develop experimental setup, problem-solving, conducting experimental campaigns, performing materials synthesis and analysis, sub-component fabrication, process optimization and integration, and preparing technical documents and research publications. Interacting and collaborating with researchers from universities, national laboratories, and private industry. Basic Qualifications:

A Ph.D. in materials science, chemical engineering, chemistry, or a related field completed within the last five years. Background and experience in in (a) composite ceramic materials related to solid oxide cells (e.g., SOFCs, SOECs, RSOCs etc.), (b) design and operation of high temperature processing equipment and experimental thermal/fluid systems, (c) electro-chemical systems and instrumentation.

Preferred Qualifications:

Knowledge in catalysis, surface science, and analytical equipment focusing on thermal characterization. Experience with prototype development. Experience in developing new ideas and proposal writing. Strong communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills. The candidate should have a proven publication record.

Special Requirements:

Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and availability of funding.
