Dredge Operator/Leverman

Orange City, United States GFL Environmental, Inc Full time
A Dredge Operator/Leverman primary duties are to perform underwater excavation (dredging) on a variety of dredges that GFL deploys. These dredges include, but are not limited to cable driven, conventional, and self-propelled machines which range in size from 6" to 12" discharge. Dredge configuration will vary from project to project depending on our client's needs, size and duration of project, type of material being excavated, and equipment availability.

Key Responsibilities:
  • During the mobilization process, the operator will assist the shore-based team in offloading and set up of the equipment. The operator will assist and communicate with the onsite foreman and/or shoreman/equipment operator to make sure that all dredging equipment and slurry pipe is mobilized correctly and efficiently based on the pre-dredge plan.
  • It is vitally important that the operator maintains production to meet all goals and deadlines for the project. This entails making sure that the equipment is in clean and proper working order and is being properly utilized for the material that it is dredging while also sending the slurry to the chemical injection systems and dewatering equipment for processing/dewatering.
  • The operator must have a clear line of communication with the shore team to make sure that his volume of material and flow is correct.
  • Monitor the suction and discharge pressures to make sure that the machine is moving material efficiently and the dewatering process is being performed in tandem with dredging operations.
  • In the process of dredging, the operator must perform regular soundings of the post-dredged surface to make sure that the completed dredge path is even and to design grade. If utilizing GPS based quantification systems such as DredgePack, the operator must do his due diligence improperly logging and monitoring the machines performance in order to provide the most accurate quantifications of production and be able to accurately project work that is being completed to GFL project management and our customers. While dredging design slopes, the operator must adhere to the design grades and limits of disturbance to prevent any damage to subsurface liners that may exist, and prevent over or under dredging of material which can lead to GFL being penalized for damage and/or incomplete or over complete work.
  • The operator will also be responsible to make sure that the machine and pipeline are in good working order every shift.
  • The operator will perform all daily, weekly, monthly, and hour-based preventive and some corrective maintenance of the machine he is operating. While performing dredging operations, fuel bunkering, dredge moving and placing, and any maintenance, the operator must make sure he and his support staff are abiding by all site and company safety regulations in order to minimize risk and prevent any injuries or contaminations on the job site.
  • Once the project is believed to be complete, the operator will work with the shoreman, survey team, management, and customers engineering representatives to make sure that all terms have been fulfilled and the customer is satisfied what the quality of the dredge cut and volume of material that has been excavated/dredged.
  • Once all volumes have been verified and the customer has deemed the project completed, the dredging and dewatering portions of the project are finished. The operator will assist in the demobilization process of the project. This will include but not be limited to disassembling, cleaning, packing, and loading of all equipment for it to be moved off the job site.

Requirements:
  • Have 3 years+ of dredge Leverman/Operator experience (cable driven, self-propelled and/or conventional machines of 6-12 inch in size)
  • Ability to fulfill schedule requirements and deadlines.
  • Have knowledge on reading and interpreting engineering design drawings, CAD drawings, and hydrographic drawings/models.
  • Familiarity with HyPack/DredgePack a plus.
  • Current OSHA & MSHA certifications are plus.
  • Knowledge of small motor vessel operations.
  • Knowledge of dewatering methods (mechanical, hydraulic, etc.).
  • Have knowledge of HDPE pipe fusion.
  • Must be authorized to work in the US.
  • Mechanical knowledge of dredges.
  • Must be able to work out of town for 21-days+ at a time, including nights, weekends, and some holidays.
  • Must be able to work in extreme heat, extreme cold, and on the water. Job sites range from very remote to industrial plant environments.
  • This is a 100% traveling position so must be willing to travel.
  • Project durations may range from 1 month to 1 year+.
