The Translational Neuroscience Lab (TNL), PI: Dr. Sabina Berretta, focuses on the neurobiology of psychiatric disorders, focusing on their molecular and genetic underpinnings. Dr. Berretta is also the Director of the Harvard Brain Tissue Resource Center. Her lab utilizes human postmortem tissue in combination with a diverse set of methods, including histochemistry, immunocytochemistry and in situ hybridization in combination with light, fluorescence and confocal microscopy to investigate the extracellular matrix in the brain.
General Summary:
The Project Manager will carry out research investigating the molecular mechanisms of brain disorders in the human brain investigate debilitating human psychiatric disorders such as Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, Depression and PTSD, as well as neurodegenerative disorders such as Huntington disease and Alzheimer disease. Applicants should have a strong interest in preclinical as well as translational neuroscience.Specifically, they will be responsible for the conduction of human postmortem studies and in vitro studies on the pathophysiology of psychiatric symptoms. The studies involve assessments of gene and protein expression at cell level resolution in combination with electronic record analyses.
In addition to their projects Project Manager will be responsible for aspects of project administration, planning and implementing study protocols directly with the PI, collaborating with several staff members on these projects, and participating in other study aspects. They will also coordinate and carry out study-related activities as required for various projects, including analyses and wet-lab work. They will contribute to manuscript writing in their studies and provide updates as needed. The individual will be able to conduct literature research as well as follow up with lab members based on their project goals and needs.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities:
§Oversight of project progression and management as a whole
§Responsible for quality control, including logistics for various studies being done
§Ensures completion of projects according to study timeline
§Trains lab staff in routine and specialized lab techniques
§Carries out independent research projects which involve the execution of highly sophisticated techniques
§Acts as general resource for study information
§Coordinates logistics and helps PI facilitate lab meetings
§Contributes to scientific literature and may present results
Qualifications
Skills/Abilities/Competencies (Required):
§Must be able to make independent, effective decisions in appropriate situations
§Must possess a scientific imagination commensurate with the independent execution of research projects
§Must have an aptitude for technical problem solving
§Ability to effectively supervise others
§Excellent organizational skills to ensure smooth functioning of lab
§Demonstrated analytical skills and ability to logically sequence projects to maximize research
§Must have working expertise in research assays including RNAscope, Western blotting, immunocytochemistry, digital microscopy
§Must have in depth human neuroanatomy knowledge
