Position Focus:

Based in the Office of the Secretary and Vice President for University Life (OSVPUL), the Associate Director for University Life provides consistent, high-quality responses and operational support for free expression/peaceable assembly, student crisis and emergencies, and other broad cross-cutting student/university life issues. The Associate Director has a comprehensive understanding of university policies and procedures to support and engage Yale’s varied campus cultures, and execute the role with appropriate clarity, diplomacy, and compassion. They must operate under a high level of confidentiality while dealing with sensitive and challenging information in moments of tension.

The Associate Director partners with members of Yale Public Safety and serves as an intermediary between the university administration, internal (students, faculty, staff, and alumni) and external stakeholders during protests and high-profile events. The individual leverages their diverse background in fields such as student affairs, social work, counseling, community organizing, community policing, nonprofit work, or conflict resolution to foster positive relationships, ensure effective communication, and manage conflicts in dynamic and often volatile situations, all in support of the university’s policies on free expression.

The Associate Director also partners with university administrators and other stakeholders in support of student safety and wellness initiatives, establishing ongoing positive relationships and assisting in the development of related policies and procedures; engages in proactive community-building activities and programming; and supports various student and university affairs functions, including working closely with on- and off-campus students and their families, assisting with student welfare checks where appropriate, and providing training and support in areas such as community engagement and conflict resolution as needed.

The Associate Director works primarily on campus, with some responsibilities requiring presence at off-campus events and other locations. The role involves evening and weekend work, especially during periods with high-profile events or emergencies and will occasionally require night duty. The position requires a balance of office work and being present at various campus locations. Additionally, the Associate Director must have the ability to be on campus with very short notice as needed.

Key duties include providing on-site logistical support in partnership with Yale Public Safety during protests, demonstrations, and peaceful dissent, and individuals and groups practicing free expression; offering policy guidance, including timely warning notices, along with remedies for a return to compliance; identifying and establishing ongoing positive relationships with student and faculty leaders, key staff, New Haven community members and other stakeholders; provide ongoing support for student safety, wellness, and community building.

Essential Duties

1. Directs, monitors, and assesses needs and directs the application of resources of an administrative University office dealing with one or more major functional areas. 2. Directs and implements solutions to problems that are routine to complex in nature and that affect multiple functional areas of responsibility. 3. Plans and/or participates in planning University activities on a long-term basis to comply with University goals and objectives. 4. Establishes and implements consistent university-wide policies in multiple functional areas of responsibility. 5. Ensures that University office policies and procedures are in compliance with federal, state, and local laws and ordinances. 6. Develops and monitors goals and objectives for managerial and professional staff in compliance with University strategies. 7. Directs a staff of exempt and non-exempt employees. 8. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in related field and five years of demonstrated experience or an equivalent combination of education and related demonstrated experience.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Familiarity with university environments and student affairs is strongly preferred.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Proven experience in conflict resolution, mediation, and de-escalation techniques.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Demonstrated ability in working collaboratively with various stakeholders. Cultural competence and ability to work with diverse populations.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Degree in field such as student affairs, social sciences, counseling, or related disciplines. Demonstrated work experience in a relevant role such as academic administration, social work, counseling, community organizing, community policing, nonprofit work, or conflict resolution.
