Summary

The Lab Transcriptionist interprets and transcribes the dictation into patient history, exam notes, operative reports, referral letters, discharge summaries, and other documents. Follows patient confidentiality guidelines and legal documentation requirements. Enters medical reports into electronic health records (EHR) systems.

Essential Job Functions

Transcribes medical reports, summaries, and other medical documents from recorded messages from health care providers. Provides online copies of transcribed documents to physicians or other providers for review and signature, making corrections or changes as noted. Works with transcription equipment that can include speech recognition equipment, word processing, and computer software. Maintains strict adherence to patient confidentiality according to provider standards and government regulations. Reviews transcription documents for quality assurance and precision to spot and correct any errors that could impact patient care and medical liability. Creates templates and enters data into electronic health record (EHR) systems for updated record keeping and archives. Prepares pathology sendouts. Prepares slides and blocks for reference labs. Pulls overdue logs. Completes registration as needed.

Education

High School/GED (required)

Associates-Medical Transcription (preferred)

Licensing

CMT Certified Medical Transcriptionist (preferred)

Experience

Previous experience in hospital or other health care setting (preferred)

Patient Population

Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit.

Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development of the life span and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age, specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in departmental policies and procedures.
