Commissioning Engineer

Charlotte, NC - hybrid

Summary of the role 

The Commissioning Engineer is responsible for technical documentation and commissioning of hydroelectric turbine-generator units. Working with the Commissioning team's Lead, the Commissioning Engineer will be reviewing designs, preparing installation manuals, plan-tooling requirements, perform verification of instruments, commissioning the auxiliaries system and the turbine & generator.


The following responsibilities form the core of this role: 

Review of technical contract specifications, identifying design requirements and developing concepts for solutions and systems. Supervise designers and actively participate in the preparation and production of engineering documents such as block diagrams, instrument lists, electrical diagrams, instrument installation details, wiring routing drawings, cable lists, P&ID diagram, and control panel specifications, while ensuring that engineering concepts and works comply with technical specifications and the requirements of applicable codes and standards. Coordinate with various engineering teams, suppliers, and customers for the integration of applicable equipment systems. Produce technical specifications for electrical equipment and review associated shop drawings. Carry out engineering instructions for work or inspections at the plant. Monitor and update the budget and engineering schedule with the project teams. Organize and participate in design reviews. Check and approve the technical documentation produced under his supervision. Participate in the development and maintenance of design tools and rules. Participate in problem-solving and identification of root causes. Prepare technical documentation for submission. Review vendor engineering documentation and ensure compliance with technical specifications. Resolving technical electrical installation issues during the assembly phase. Being on-site during the commissioning phase, directing the commissioning of the units, coordinating daily meetings, updating the schedule, completing daily reports, and being the bridge between the client and the commissioning engineers. Contribute to overall quality and excellence in execution of installation & commissioning. Review the designs and propose changes to reduce installation challenges, improve safety and quality as well as reduce time and cost of installation. Enhance Field Services team’s technical excellence through technical support, training and mentoring on best practices, calculations, etc. Support the project execution team on installation and commissioning matters.


During the preparation and planning phase:

Support the project execution team on installation and commissioning matters; Technical governance and customer relations on technical matters; Enhance Field Services team’s technical excellence through technical support, training and mentoring on best practices, calculations, etc.; Ensure on-time delivery of Field Service documentation; Review the designs and propose changes to reduce installation challenges, improve safety and quality as well as reduce time and cost of installation; Participate in technical training of site teams; Document technical expertise and best practices; Contribute to overall quality and excellence in execution of installation & commissioning.


During the execution phase:

Ensure work is performed safely; Perform instrument functionality verification at site ; Responsible for the start-up of the various auxiliaries system; Perform the commissioning of the turbine & generator; Filled the quality record has work progress; Work with the field instrumentation technician to plan and support the pre-commissioning effort; Provide support to the site teams regarding the technical issues or challenges; Collaborate in resolving complex problems.

Bachelor’s in electrical engineering/ electronics engineer; At least 5 years of professional experience in electrical engineering with experience in automation and design Experience in turbine-generator instrumentation or equivalent industry experience. Experience in general instrumentation and control system design (asset). Experience or knowledge of hydroelectric or other power generation fields (asset). Experience or knowledge of hydraulic power and control systems (asset). Demonstrated ability to analyze and resolve technical problems and to design practical and cost-effective solutions. Ability to manage multiple simultaneous projects. Knowledge of AutoCAD (desired) and AutoCAD Electrical (asset) CAD software. Functional knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (, Excel, Word, Project, etc.). Good interpersonal skills, collaboration, and teamwork (required). Willing to travel and work on site 70%. Required to work onsite during unit commissioning. Bilingual (English, Spanish) is desired.
