Position Summary:

The Lead Summer Camp Counselor supervises Summer Camp Counselors and facilitates age-appropriate activities in a seasonal day camp setting. Provides a quality day camp experience that is focused on the YMCA core values: honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring. Expected Camp dates are late May until mid-August and is a seasonal position where the employee will voluntarily separate at the conclusion of the season.

Essential Functions:
  1. Supervise summer camp counselors and campers participating in day camp activities.
  2. Ensure active compliance with all rules and regulations established for the camp and campers.
  3. Plans and implements program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate, and consistent with YMCA values.
  4. Recognize and respond to opportunities for problem-solving with summer camp counselors in the supervision of the campers.
  5. Encourage cooperation, teamwork, and participation among the Summer Camp Counselors.
  6. Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention, and emergencies, and assists in enforcement.
  7. Assess the appropriateness of campers' behavior and administer appropriate behavior management techniques in accordance with camp rules and regulations.
  8. Report behavior and other problems promptly to the Assistant Summer Camp Director or Director.
  9. Observe and maintain daily alertness for any camper's illness and/or injury. Promptly report all health-related situations to the First Aid Specialist and the Assistant Summer Camp Director, or Director.
  10. Maintains positive relations with parents and other staff. Models relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions.
  11. Adheres to program standards, including safety and cleanliness standards.
  12. Availability to work a 6-7 hr daily shift, which will either start at 6 am or finish at 6 pm, Monday-Friday, 25-40 hours per week.
  13. Ability to work 40 out of the 50 camp days

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. One year or more of college is preferred.
  2. Previous experience working with children preferably in a day camp setting
  3. Experience preferred in one or more of the following areas: outdoor living, archery, boating, camping, songs/music, skits, sports, aquatics, recreational games, etc.
  4. Previous experience with diverse populations is preferred.
  5. Demonstrated professional behavior and leadership abilities.
  6. Proven experience in leading and counseling others.
  7. CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications within 30 days of hire date.
