BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:

Guided by and adhering to the legal requirements of the State of California and the district policies of the Rio school District, the school nurse will conduct a health services program for the evaluation, improvement and protection of the health of pupils.

DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE TO:

Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

General Health Services and Appraisal

1. Conducts health screening program and completes corresponding reports as mandated by the State Department of Education (i.e. vision, scoliosis, dental, CHDP physicals, etc.).

2. Conducts the Hearing Screening Conservation program

3. Serves as a member of the Special Education Assessment Team and participates in Individual Education Plan meetings.

4. Gives direction to school staff regarding the administration of medication to students.

5. Interprets health and development status of pupils to administrators, teachers and parents, as needed.

6. Cooperates with individual building principals and faculties to plan for best use of any health services available to the school.

7. Serves as a resource person in the area of health for staff, parents and students.

8. Participates in school site Student Study Team meetings.

9. Participates in district-mandated programs.

10. Maintains individual student health records

11. Cooperates in handling cases of suspected child abuse.

12. Monitors health status of students requiring home and hospital teaching instructional services.

13. Instructs and counsels students relative to hygiene, diet, health and development.

14. Serves as liaison with community agencies, groups and professionals to exchange information regarding health programs and individual health needs.

15. Makes appropriate referrals to public or private agencies and professionals.

16. Other duties as assigned.

OTHER DUTIES

1. Serves as a member or chairperson of districtwide committees.

2. Attends Board of Education meetings, as requested.

3. Attends or makes presentations to PTA and other community groups, as requested.

4. Attends and participates in professional meetings.

5. Cooperates with community groups in planning, organizing and conducting specific health projects.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

BA/BS Degree and Health Services Credential

EXPERIENCE:

Experience as a school nurse and/or its equivalent is desirable.

* Must hold a School Nurse Services Credential or hold a valid CA Nursing License with the intent of obtaining a School Nurse Services Credential.
