(based on experience): $23-$30/hr Summary The surgical technologist (ST) is involved in the preparation of the operating room for the scheduled cases of the day. The ST, with the help of the other members of the surgical team assembles supplies, equipment and instruments in accordance with the surgeon’s preference card for the daily cases. The ST scrubs for the cases and assists the surgeon by passing instruments, sutures and equipment to the surgeon. Essential Duties and Responsibilities The essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Assists in opening case supplies, instruments, and equipment observing sterile technique, patient positioning, appropriate handling of specimens and cultures, room turn over and picking supplies, instruments, etc for the cases for the next day based on surgeon preference cards. Open all surgical supplies, equipment, and instruments adhering to aseptic surgical technique. Checks sterilization indicators inside wrapped instruments and equipment to ensure sterility prior to placing on the sterile field. Sets up and maintains the sterile field and monitors all members of the surgical team to ensure procedures are followed and all instruments remain sterile. Assists the surgeon with the surgical draping of the patient. Anticipates and provides instruments, sutures, sponges and supplies as needed by the surgeon. Implements safe practices and evaluation of environment of care including fire prevention, security, hazardous materials and waste management, emergency preparedness, infection control and safe use of medical equipment and utilities. Participates in all phases of instrument and equipment cleaning and sterile processing. Contributes to patient safety by following standardized needle and sharp counts, disposal of sharps, checking surgical equipment for proper functioning and promptly reporting any discrepancies in count or malfunctioning equipment to the OR Charge Nurse or Director of Surgery. Qualifications To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Education and/or Experience Education: Graduation from an accredited surgical technician program. CPR certification. Experience: New grads welcome Specific Skills: Knowledge of skills and practices to assist in surgery. Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and the public. Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
