Job Summary:

Under the direction of a Radiation Oncologist and the general supervision of a Medical Physicist, an incumbent of this class is responsible for producing an external beam treatment plan for patients undergoing radiation therapy, either by use of isodose charts or treatment planning computer, calculating dose distribution for brachytherapy implant procedures using radioactive materials, and assisting physicists in optimizing clinical workflows. Supervision may be exercised over radiotherapy technologists in the implementation of the treatment plan.

Responsibilities:
  • Consults with the Radiaiton Oncologist on the patient diagnosis and RT treatment plan;
  • Obtains contours of the patient for treatment plan calculations
  • Develops teletherapy treatment plans in consultation with the Radation Oncologist using isodose charts or treatment planning computer
  • Produces or participates in the production of teletherapy treatment devices, such as shadow blocks and tissue compensatory
  • Reviews patient treatment charts at least weekly with Medical Physicist, ensuring accuracy of calculations and dosages
  • Prepares final chart and dosage summary for presentation to Radiation Oncologist after completion of therapy
  • Participates in weekly radiation therapy chart rounds
  • Assists Medical Physicist in brachytherapy dosage calculations
  • Provides instruction and inservice training to departmental staff, as needed
  • May perform in-vivo dosimetry, such as TLD measurement, under the supervision of the Medical Physicist
  • May participate in special dosimetry related projects with the Medical Physicist
  • Related duties as assigned
Qualifications/Requirements:

Experience:
  • At least two years of clinical radiation oncology working experience, required
Education:
  • Associate's Degree in Physical Science, Biological Science or related field, required
  • Bachelor's Degree Physical Science, Biological Science or related field, preferred
  • 2 years of experience can be used in lieu of 1 years of education
Licenses / Certifications:
  • Current Medical Dosimetrist Certification (CMD), required
  • Board certification, preferred, and if not, must be board eligible
    • If not certified, certification as a Medical Dosimetrist by the MDCB is required within 1 year of hire

Other: Thorough knowledge of computerized radiation treatment planning systems; good knowledge of the human anatomy; good knowledge of specific safety precautions which must be observed in the operation and use of radiological equipment and radioactive materials; ability to maintain effective working relationships with medical and nursing staff; ability to effectively use computer applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, e-mail and database software in performing work assignments; initiative; tact; sound judgment; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
