Pay

This position is an exempt position at pay grade 219.

Bonus: $10,000 initial sign on bonus (external candidates only)

Attendance

Non-rotating 40-hour work week, Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm; must be available to work additional hours as needed.

Overview

The Veterinarian provides medical over-site of the animals housed at CCACS. They ensure that the animals receive proper medical care including providing surgeries, vaccinations, medications as needed, health exams, and scheduling of medical procedures. They ensure the facility complies with all state and federal regulations for animal welfare. Supervision of Veterinary Assistants and Veterinary Clinic Lead. At times performs euthanasia as needed. Educates owners of proper pet ownership. Train CCACS staff as needed in animal welfare practices.

Responsibilities

• Performs surgeries for shelter animals that have been adopted, animals that have been tagged for rescue, and also those selected for sponsored adoption events. Ensure animals leave shelter in an expedited manner.

• Log all controlled drugs used during procedures, add medical notes for each animal.

• Supervise Veterinarian Assistants and Lead Vet Tech during surgery

• Leading medical professional over rabies control

• As needed, perform intake and exit exams for animals involved in bites

• Monitor health of animals in quarantine daily

• Perform yearly inspections on rabies quarantine and ensure compliance with all municipal and state laws. Provide education and training to employees and citizens regarding rabies control and dog bite prevention

• Supervise all employees to include Veterinary Assistants, Veterinary Clinic Lead, Kennel technicians, and Control Officer trainees while in Vet Clinic.

• Direct supervision in application of various controlled substances and medication for animals. Functional supervision over kennel staff when ACS Supervisor(s) are not on site

• Coaching, mentoring, and training employees in animal welfare practices/ clinic procedures

• Monitor all supplies, equipment, and controlled substances available to employees

• Complete daily rounds with other CCACS staff to evaluate all animals housed at shelter

• Select animals for "work ups" for surgery to be placed in adoption, rescue foster or humanely euthanized

• Goal of shortening length of stay for animals at shelter while keeping positive live release goal in mind

• Record animal information in CCAS software. Ensure proper capacity to care is followed and observation notes for animals entered

• Examine all animals involved in Animal Cruelty Investigation/ Cases. Provide detailed reports of animals conditions, possible cases of cruelty and neglect for case files.

• Perform necropsy's for animals to determine cause of death. Testify in court for animal related cases/ crimes. Work and assist Officers investigating animal cruelty calls

• Assist ACS Supervisor in preparation of large scale impoundments. As needed provide training on cruelty and forensics for all staff

• Create cleaning and sanitation protocols for shelter and campus. Strictly monitor cleaning protocols to limit the spread of diseases. Assist ACS Supervisor in prevention of or mitigation of zoonotic disease outbreak(s)

• May be asked to perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

• Requires Graduate Degree

•Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners License)

Minimum of four (4) years of experience

• DPS controlled substance registration

• DEA controlled substance registration

• A valid driver's license is required; successful out-of-state candidates must be able to obtain a valid Texas driver's license within 90 days of hire

Basis of Rating

Application review and the City may also conduct additional skill assessment tests, in addition to the panel interview.
