Position Summary

The responsibility of a Posse member is to promote good fellowship and community service through volunteer and paid functions. Shifts are based upon need and availability within supporting the county. Majority of the shifts are weekends patrolling wedding dances and the county parks during the spring, summer, and fall. Additional shifts are available working events at the Fairgrounds, Winstock Country Music Festival, and other support services to within the Sheriff's Office. Predetermined hours are not assigned to this position as Posse members sign-up for the shifts they are available. Mandatory monthly meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month from 7pm-9pm.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities

The following duties are normal for this classification.These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.Other duties may be required and assigned.

Position Duties

  • Assist the McLeod County Sheriff's Office in maintaining peace within McLeod County communities.
  • Work scheduled shifts at the McLeod County Fair and Winstock Country Music Festival.
  • Assist in the guarding of Inmates.
  • Provide security at public and private dances.
  • Work scheduled shifts in the McLeod County Parks.
Essential Functions
  • Physical
    • Required to expend a "high" intensity of effort for duties including the movement and handling of individuals who may be combative. Must have the ability to defend self or others during a physical encounter. Work requires abilities for full range of physical movement and the ability to lift 50 pounds.
    • Repetitive, small mechanical motion requiring full use of arms, hands, and fingers.
    • Work requires all type of shift work which could include prolonged time seated in a vehicle and movement in and around the law enforcement facilities, Fairgrounds, Winstock, etc. while sitting, standing, walking or running.
    • May be at risk of exposure to airborne pathogens, i.e. tuberculosis, bloodborne pathogens, i.e. and hepatitis through verbal or physical contact.
  • Aptitude
    • A "medium" ability to communicate with other staff through direct contact, telephones, and intercoms is required on a daily basis. Work involves comprehensive communication through written reports.
    • Work may involve working alone requiring a "medium" ability to react decisively and appropriately.
    • Employee must have a "high" sense of personal protection in dealing with high-risk individuals (i.e. infectious disease and/or waste).
    • Day to day activities require many complex functions requiring a "medium" retention of policies and procedures.
    • Employee is required to have a "high" ability to maintain confidential and sensitive information.
  • Sensory
    • Employee is required to have a "high" ability to determine odors that may be threatening to themselves or to others and react accordingly.
    • Since job requires employee to work independently a "high" clear and uninterrupted competency level is essential.
Non-Essential Functions
  • Perform other duties as assigned or apparent.
Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
Required Training
  • Responsible for attending training sessions as scheduled by the Posse Captain and/or Sergeant.
  • Must be able to attend the mandatory monthly meetings where training is provided.
Required Certifications/Licenses
  • Valid MN driver's license with proof of insurance and good driving record.
  • First Aid and CPR
  • S. citizenship
Relationships
  • Communicate with the public as needed.
  • Gather information to take the appropriate action to resolve issues/complaints.
  • Local and state public safety agencies.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • None
Working Conditions
  • Work is performed in a vehicle, on an ATV or foot as needed.
  • Duties include working with suspects who may become combative or assaultive.
  • Work entails a risk of exposure to blood borne pathogens such as hepatitis, and airborne pathogens.
