Job Summary:

Provides paramedic level emergency medical care to patients at the scene, in transport, and at the hospital. Transports patients from the scene to the hospital or from one facility to another facility. Directs the work of Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) while on duty

Job Duties:

Routine duties shall include providing health care services to individuals eligible for services in accordance with the self-governance compact and funding agreement between the Cherokee Nation and the United States executed under the authority of the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act. Assures all patients receive medical care to the paramedic level according to the Cherokee Nation Ambulance Service Protocols. Operates and monitors specialized equipment such as mechanical cardiopulmonary resuscitators, EKG monitors, cardiac defibrillators, laryngoscopes, oro-pharyngeal suction equipment, oxygen delivery devices, and IV infusion pumps per paramedic protocols and medical control. Obtains a history on each patient's past and present medical problems, medications and allergies. Administers therapeutic measures as prescribed per protocol or medical control such as initiation of IV fluids, wound irrigation, naso-gastric intubation, cardiac monitoring, defibrillation, tracheal intubation and thoracentesis. Provides direction and supervision pertaining to patient care, scene management and maintenance to EMT students of all levels while students are on duty including at the scene, in transport and at the medical facility. Maintains supplies and equipment on ambulance. Assures units are clean and safe. Takes charge on scene and oversees all aspects of patient care. Complies with the applicable state, tribal, and federal regulations regarding the security, safety and confidentiality of any health services record they create, maintain, transfer, or destroy, whether the record is written, taped, computerized, or stored in any other medium. Assess patient clinical conditions, recognizing identifying, and interpreting serious situations. Prioritizing, and immediately deciding upon and taking proper action, for example, to inform the physician and take preplanned measures. Initiate appropriate measures in emergencies when the physician is not immediately available, for example, take resuscitative measures in case of cardiac or respiratory arrest. Plan to provide, and appropriately document the teaching of patients and families in preventative, curative, and rehabilitative measures, taking into consideration patients and families learning needs, styles, barriers, and readiness to learn. Assist in screening patients, and gathering and recording specific information from patients. Takes and records vital signs and body measurements. Maintains proficiency in data entry in the Electronic Health Record (EHR). Reports and completes data entry to ensure compliance with federal, state, and tribal regulations. Share responsibilities for sustaining adequate supplies and equipment as well as general upkeep of the unit and preserving a safe environment. Demonstrate positive role modeling and leadership qualities. Adheres to and promotes professional, ethical, and legal standards. Maintain and promote positive personal work habits, interpersonal skills, and public relationships with employees, administration, medical staff, patients, and families. Assist in the accomplishment of any initiative of the facility and or agency through the conscientious performance of assigned duties in support of the Cherokee Nation mission. Provides Human Resources with a copy of licensures, certifications, renewal of licensures, and certifications upon receipt thereof. Establish intravenous (IV) and intraosseous (IO) access, when appropriate. Respond to appropriate codes and Rapid Responses within the hospital and assist with resuscitative measures, as directed. Assist with intrafacility transport of patients. Apply medical devices to a patient, as ordered. Maintain appropriate maintenance/fuel reports including receipts. Ensure that each ambulance in the fleet is properly maintained including routine maintenance. Perform aseptic techniques to obtain and collect lab specimens as requested. Transport lab specimens to the lab if necessary. Perform 12 lead EKGs when needed in the Emergency Department. Obtain and maintain teaching certification to instruct ACLS, BLS, and PALS, as needed. Teach AHA classes to staff as needed. Become certified and maintain certification of the National Incident Management System (NIMS) and Emergency Vehicle Operators Course (EVOC). Perform Point care testing after proper training and competency. Other duties may be assigned.

Qualifications:

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT

Successful completion of a paramedic program from an accredited college or technical school.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT

None required.

COMPUTER SKILLS

An individual should have knowledge of Internet software; Spreadsheet software, and Word Processing software. Basic knowledge and entering data into Electronic Health Record. Knowledge and data entry into state required data reporting system.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Must possess a valid drivers license with a driving history verified through a motor vehicle report that meets requirements for Cherokee Nation underwriting rating. Must possess and maintain a Paramedic License issued by the Oklahoma State Department of Health. Must possess Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications and maintain throughout employment. Must obtain BLS Instructor, ACLS Instructor, and PALS Instructor certifications within six (6) months of hire and maintain throughout employment. Must obtain National Incident Management Systems (NIMS) and Emergency Vehicle Operators Course (EVOC) certifications within three (3) months of hire and maintain throughout employment.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Must keep all knowledge and skills current through specific continued education as required by Oklahoma State Department of Health/EMS Division for renewing licensure. Must be able to operate all emergency medical equipment.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

The employee must not be and will not be under sanction by the United States Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General (OIG) or by the General Services Administration (GSA) or listed on the OIG's Cumulative Sanction Report, or the GSA's List of Excluded Providers, or listed on the OIG's List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE).

Must meet and maintain pre-employment and periodic background investigation and adjudication for child care.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts; in high, precarious places; and in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and risk of radiation. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
