Description

This position is primarily responsible for effectively coordinating and participating in pre-operative and intra-operative procedures in the role of the circulator and functioning as a Service Leader for a specialty. This position is also responsible for assisting in the maintenance of equipment and supplies. Applies knowledge of age related factors to patients ranging from adults and geriatrics.

Job Duties:

Assessment
  • Collects and analyzes data about the patient leading to an accurate identification of problems necessary to make a nursing diagnoses
  • Systematically and continuously collects, records, and appropriately communicates data regarding the infant'/family's health status
  • Performs initial physiological needs assessment within established time frames
  • Accurately and timely completes the admission assessment forms to include biophysical, psychosocial, educational, and environmental factors
  • Derives appropriate nursing diagnosis from identified problems based on data collected
  • Reassess and documents the patient's infant's total needs per established unit policy
  • Routinely reviews assessment data, identifies educational needs, and initiates discharge planning
Clinical Competency
  • Possess the knowledge edge and clinical skills required to deliver quality care
  • Performs clinical skills per unit procedures and/or specific check lists
  • Willingly assists physicians as needed in an efficient manner
  • Interprets lab values and responds appropriately; reporting areas of concern to the physician in a timely manner
  • Effectively responds to crisis situations and/or prevents patient deterioration by early intervention
  • Demonstrates ability to care for patients as outlined in standards of care
  • Demonstrates critical thinking by considering the implications of medical orders with relationship to the current therapy and the individual needs of the patient
  • Appropriately manages patients receiving medications commonly used in procedural sedation
Departmental Responsibilities
  • Strives to improve the overall effectiveness of the nursing unit
  • Uses work time productively; limits personal phone calls, personal written communication, visitors, etc. to break and meal times
  • Routinely maintains a safe and clean patient care work area to promote patient and visitor satisfaction
  • Demonstrates flexibility in working hours, shift schedules, and patient assignments in order to meet staffing requirements
  • Accepts responsibility for attending staff meetings, reviewing staff meeting minutes, and all other unit communications
  • Provides proper cleaning, care, and timely reporting of equipment repairs
Documentation and evaluation
  • Evaluates and documents the appropriateness and effectiveness of the nursing care administered
  • Evaluates and documents patients responses to all interventions and procedures carried out both on a physical, psychological, and developmental basis
  • Consults, re-evaluates, and revises multidisciplinary plan of care based on patient's progress and behaviors
  • Documents medication/narcotic administration per policy
  • Assesses and documents the effectiveness of all PRN medications within l hour of administration or per unit policy
  • Documents changes from baseline assessment
  • Documents verbal orders on the physician order sheet and ensures co-signature per policy
  • Accurately and legibly documents using hospital approved abbreviations, appropriate signatures, titles, error corrections and black ink
  • Appropriately communicates and documents occurrences in a timely manner
  • Assures completeness of nursing documentation on the legal record
Implementation
  • Ensures delivery of efficient nursing care
  • Establishes priorities and implements or delegates nursing actions consistent with the patient plan of care
  • Safely performs and correctly documents nursing interventions consistent with scientific principle and unit policy
  • Provides care for individuals based upon age-specific needs utilizing a developmental perspective
  • Communicates accurate information about the nursing care plan to patient/parent/guardian
  • Assists in referring patient/family to Social Services or to appropriate community agencies as needed
  • Gives accurate report on patients to other health care members including care given and changes in patient condition to ensure continuity of patient care
Leadership/Charge Nurse
  • Demonstrates and utilizes effective leadership and decision making skills
  • Identifies and appropriately communicates problems on the unit and actively participates in resolution methods
  • Appropriately delegates duties and tasks based on clinical competency and experience level of the available staff
  • Accurately communicates to Nursing Supervisor the need for staffing assistance and adjusts assignments as necessary
  • Effectively coordinates and supervises assigned RNs, LPNs, and Nursing Assistants in performance of duties
  • Assists physicians with patient rounds and communicates pertinent patient information
  • Organizes work load and assists other staff members as needed
Patient Education
  • Encourages participation and share responsibility for providing information related to prevention, maintenance and restoration of health
  • Utilizes assessment data to develop an educational plan in conjunction with the patient/family/parent/guardian, and/or other disciplines to effectively meet the identified needs
  • Actively participates in patient education by appropriately utilizing available resources and adjusting it to meet the patient's individual needs and level of understanding
  • Evaluates and documents patient and/or family's response to education given
  • Documents discharge teaching information given
Planning of Patient Care
  • Makes decision about priorities of care, establishes goals and selects the best nursing actions to achieve desired results, making adaptations as needed
  • Initiates plan of care reflecting the assessment of the immediate physiological needs of the infant within established time frames
  • Develops plan of nursing care in conjunction with the individual/parent/guardian and/or family and includes expected outcomes appropriate for the nursing diagnosis and unique patient/family needs
  • Prioritizes and prescribes appropriate nursing measures to achieve the expected outcomes
  • Evaluates, modifies, and updates the nursing care plan based on observable patient responses and attainment of patient outcomes within established time frames
  • Organizes, plans, and documents discharge needs in the care plan
Professionalism and self development
  • Maintains awareness of current techniques, procedures, developments, etc., within the nursing profession and strives to maintain a high level of professionalism
  • Participates in continuing education to enhance knowledge and skills
  • Accepts accountability for actions by utilization of self-evaluation, peer and supervisor evaluation to modify job performance
  • Acts as a resource model for other team members and students as needed by providing help and accurate information when requested
  • Participates in orientation of new staff members and provides feedback to Clinical Coordinator/Instructor as necessary
  • Utilizes appropriate channels to communicate stressful situations and/or areas of concern
  • Attends required educational in-services as scheduled
Safety
  • Provides a safe environment according to established hospital policies and procedures
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and adheres to hospital and departmental fire and safety regulations and disaster plans
  • Monitors emergency equipment and maintains documentation; reports problems immediately
  • Accurately identifies high risk patients and implements appropriate safety measures
  • Routinely checks patients ID bracelet prior to administration of medications, treatments, and/or procedures
  • Utilizes appropriate measures when assisting and transporting patients
  • Routinely follows Infant Safety/Security Guidelines

Education:

Graduate of an approved Nursing Program (BSN preferred)

Certifications and Licensure:

Active license as a Registered Nurse to practice in the state of Tennessee. BLS Required. ACLS preferred.

Experience:

1 Year Operating Room Experience preferred
