JOB SUMMARY: Diagnoses, with accuracy, cytologic material in accordance with the Bethesda System and/or regulatory requirements. Provides technical and clerical assistance in the Anatomic Pathology Laboratory.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Essential Functions:

* Demonstrates a commitment to the mission of Swedish Covenant Hospital and the Service Guild and demonstrates a service orientation and adheres to all responsibilities and standards of the Hospital and the Guild.

1. Diagnoses, with accuracy, cytologic material in accordance with the Bethesda System and/or regulatory requirements.

2. Types, revises, distributes and retrieves cytology reports.

3. Maintains and documents daily and monthly quality control in the Cytology Department.

4. Participates and assists in the quality assurance program of the Cytology Department.

5. Responds, assists and, whenever necessary, directs any inquiries about hospital or laboratory services in the appropriate manner.

6. Prepares, maintains and organizes work area.

7. Whenever needed, performs the following tasks: receives, accessions and processes cytology specimens.

8. Knowledgeable of and responsible for upholding and following regulations, legislation and laws enforced by the State of Illinois and the Federal Government.

9. Enhances professional growth and development through active participation in educational programs, current literature, inservice meetings and workshops.

10. Maintains and promotes established hospital and departmental policies and procedures to comply with safety, environmental and infection control standards.

11. Understands the importance of professional appearance and behavior and conducts him/herself in a customer and team oriented manner. Supports the Hospital's Mission Statement, Customer Relations Program and policy concerning Patient Rights and Responsibilities.

Other functions:

12. Whenever needed, prepares bone marrow slides, sperm, synovial fluid and bile for analysis.

13. Receives, keeps inventory and stores departmental supplies.

14. Provides phone coverage for other departments as needed.

PATIENT CARE/AGE SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND QUALIFICATIONS:

Must be able to recognize the clinical needs and patterns of patients from a variety of age groups as it pertains to the application and utilization of laboratory testing requirements and results.

INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL CONTACTS:

Internal contacts may include any member of the health care delivery team. External contact would include health care personnel/professionals, regulating/governmental agency personnel, patients and visitors.

ENVIRONMENT:

Primary body position: Sitting = 90%, Standing/Walking = 10%

Lifting requirements: lab supplies to max. of 20 lbs. (5%)

Repetitive tasks: keyboard entry (50%)

Exposure to environmental conditions: diseased specimens, chemical fumes and solutions (70%)

Known risk factors: exposure to airborne pathogens (5%)
