Overview To maintain extracorporeal circulation during cardiothoracic surgical procedures through proper utilization of necessary knowledge and resources for adult patients in accordance with standards, policies, procedures, protocols, and guidelines. Maintains responsibility to the Cardiac Surgeon during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) procedures. 2. Functions and operates the heart lung machine. 3. Inspects all tubing and other items inserted into the heart lung machine. 4. Administers blood, blood products, drugs, and fluids into CPB equipment as prescribed by attending physician. 5. Maintains a working knowledge of the intra-aortic balloon pump. 6. Identifies and distinguishes various equipment used for different bypass procedures. 7. Uses of blood processors and sequestering devices (autologous blood processors and hemoconcentrators). 8. Maintains basic knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, blood gas analysis, electrolytes, gas exchange, and hemodilution as it relates to CPB. 9. Maintains certification and licensure as indicated in specifications above. 10. Maintains continuing education. 11. Abides by the operating room rules and regulations as related to dress code, sterile technique, and sterilization. 12. Maintains correct and precise charting on the appropriate record during an open heart procedure. 13. Rotates call, providing coverage 24 hours per day, seven days per week. 14. Maintains knowledge in the theory and use of circulatory assist devices, portable cardiopulmonary bypass, and other related devices and procedures. 15. Maintains working knowledge of platelet gel and platelet concentrate procedures with the ability to carry out such procedures. 16. Acquires the knowledge of the different preferences of each surgeon and adjust accordingly. 17. Abides by MHS Behavioral Standards. 18. Maintains working knowledge of HIPEC procedure. 19. Performs other related work as required or requested. Basic Qualifications Education: Graduate of an accredited cardiovascular perfusion training program. Licensure/Certification/Registry: •Certified by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion. •Licensed by the state of Illinois •BLS required.
