JOB TITLE: PARAMEDIC

DEPARTMENT: FIRE & EMERGENCY SERVICES

MUST MEET MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: High school diploma or GED; Must have a current State of Georgia Paramedic License, must possess and maintain a valid Georgia drivers license and/or Georgia Commercial Driver=s License (CDL), must be a US Citizen or possess resident status, must maintain current certifications, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Advanced Cardia Life Support (ACLS). May be required to attain and maintain additional certifications specific to assignment.

NATURE OF WORK: The purpose of this classification is to perform technical and specialized work functions associated with preparing for and responding to fire, rescue, and disaster emergency calls, with protecting life and property, with supporting fire safety, prevention and equipment maintenance tasks, and with providing advanced emergency medical treatment activities.

SOME OF THE ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES INCLUDE: Enforces all County Fire codes, ordinances as well as fire laws and regulations of the state in order to protect life and property; complies with all rules, orders, and instructions issued by superior officer. Drives emergency and/or other fire vehicles to transport emergency/fire personnel and equipment to/from incident scene as necessary from any station. Maintains current knowledge of metro area and County geography/streets; selects most efficient route; utilizes warning lights and siren to alert traffic. Responds to emergency calls involving fires, hazardous materials, and vehicle accidents with a company; evaluates scene upon arrival; may direct traffic and control crowds. Trained in basic fire suppression to facilitate response to emergency calls involving fires, hazardous material, and vehicle accidents with a company; evaluates scene upon arrival; may direct traffic and control crowds. Identifies dangerous conditions, electrical emergencies, and hazardous material and ancillary health hazards; applies appropriate precautions and procedures; informs and/or evaluates individual and implements appropriate medical protocols. Performs various type pf rescue operations as assigned, such as extrication from trenches, machinery, vehicles, water rescues, and search for possible drowning victims. Responds to emergency and non-emergency medical calls; overseas work of and guides EMT on assigned shifts: assesses and determines needs of the patient and/or situation; communicates information to the emergency medical dispatcher. Assigns priorities of care, assesses critically ill and injured treatment: provides medical assistance during fore ground activities. May be assigned to medical sector of incident operations. Performs advanced emergency medical treatment such as interpretation of diagnostic signs, stabilization of victims, administration of heart-related drugs and defibrillation. Initiates basic and advanced life support procedures according to established standing orders; assesses the effects of treatment; relays complete medical information to hospital personnel assuming the case; provides emergency medical transport of sick or injured persons as necessary. Monitors and communicates effectively and coherently over the radio channels while imitating and responding to radio communications; performs regular radio tests. Prepares. Inspects, inventories, repairs and/or maintains first aid equipment, and vehicles for safe operations; and tests equipment on a daily basis. Establishes and maintains positive public relations; attends community meetings; promotes and teaches emergency medical safety and injury prevention; responds to questions and requests information. Communicates with supervisors, employees and other departments, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities; review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems. Maintains current field code manuals, policies and procedures, employee handbooks, various maps, addressed and related material for references and/or review; maintains knowledge of medical operations techniques. Completes and prepares a variety of forms, logs, requests, records, reports, correspondence, and various other document associated with the daily responsibilities of the position; maintains administrative records and files. Cooperates with federal, states and local law enforcement agencies and their officer or representatives when activities are related to investigations within the County jurisdiction. Attend required training sessions; verifies that individual training is documented to the departments training records, reports all missed scheduled training to supervisor for rescheduling. Administer medications to victims on-site and in transit to medical facilities if necessary as approved by the medical director.

Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

SELECTION PROCEDURE: Selection will be made from a register of eligible applicants that may be established by education, work experience, test score, personal interview, credit check, criminal history, driving history (copy of driver=s license may be required), drug screen, and/or physical examination.
