The Senior Academic Advisor acts as a leader among undergraduate professional advising staff, facilitating training and support for other advisors in the office.
Primary responsibilities include overseeing CSU's conditional admit program, SuccessU; Academic Probations; and Undecided major advisement and coaching.

The Senior Academic Advisor works under the direction of the Director of Undergraduate Advising and Student Support who reports to the Dean of Student Success. The Senior Academic Advisor will provide academic advising services to part-time/full-time students enrolled in undergraduate programs. The position requires an individual who can handle sensitive and confidential information. The Senior Academic Advisor provides guidance and coaching to facilitate learning, goal setting, and planning. Working in partnership with stakeholders throughout the university community, including the Offices of Student Success, Rise Academy, Global Engagement, Divisions of Student Affairs, Enrollment Management, Athletics, the Wellness Center, and other academic units on campus, the academic advisors are student advocates integral to student learning, growth, and development. Job Description
  • Oversee the interview process for conditionally admitted students through CSU's SuccessU program. This includes working directly with the Office of Admissions to secure prospective student lists and schedule interviews and provide applicant status feedback to Admissions.
  • Work with the Rise Academy Director to ensure successful transition of all SuccessU students into Rise Academy courses and programming throughout the first year of enrollment.
  • Consult with the Office of the Registrar to develop communications plans related to Academic Probations and SuccessU Holds Resolutions processes.
  • Partner with Department Chairs to organize and host an Undecided Majors Fair once per semester to aid in coaching and supporting students towards program selection.
  • Provide academic program-specific advisement regarding course requirements, transfer articulation, and academic progress.
  • Assist students with course selection and sequencing; determine eligibility and satisfactory progress toward degree completion.
  • Communicate academic progress and findings to university administration to ensure compliance with financial aid and athletic requirements.
  • Facilitate high-touch advising, connecting students with academic support, and determining appropriate educational solutions for all students
  • Build understanding of campus values, policies, procedures, and resources
  • Provide leadership in improving university advising practices and policies
  • Assist Director of Undergraduate Advising with hosting registration sessions at the beginning and end of each semester for continuing students.
  • Assist Director of Undergraduate Advising with organizing and leading the New/Transfer Student Orientation registration process and onboarding of new students
  • Develop rapport with campus partners within other academic units
  • Provide referrals for services to appropriate campus resources, including counseling, abilities, wellness, financial aid, tutoring, etc.
  • Facilitate coordination among campus providers to enable student success
  • Effectively use institutional technological systems such as EAB-Navigate, Banner, CAPP, Early Alert Warning Systems, and other web-based software.
  • Update and maintain student records
  • Advise and coach students to help them reach their academic goals and complete their academic program
  • Track advancement of students and provide additional support and guidance where necessary
  • Participate in selected recruitment, outreach, and retention activities as assigned
  • Develop and maintain appropriate schedules and reports
  • Perform degree audit and commencement activities
  • Have extensive knowledge of all of CSU's undergraduate programs of study to provide well-informed educational recommendations to undecided students
  • Mentor and provide training to new and less experienced advisors
  • Assist Director of Undergraduate Advising in managing escalated student issues
  • Serve as a member of the Student Success Task Force providing insight in efforts to improve retention, persistence, and graduation
  • Other special projects/committees as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in counseling, higher education, or a related field.
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in postsecondary academic advising, student development or a related field.
  • Proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Exceptional customer service aptitude and attention to detail
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent listening and skills
  • Must possess subject matter expertise including extensive knowledge of university offerings, services, policies, and procedures, registration and advisement

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in liberal arts, education, psychology, student personnel administration or a highly related field.
  • Experience teaching as an adjunct or instructor at a postsecondary institution.
  • Familiarity with the concepts and principles of operation for a First Year Experience Program.
  • Experience with student data bases and degree audit systems is highly desirable.

  • Customer and Personal Service - Knowledge of principles and processes for providing quality educational advising and coaching services. This includes student needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of student satisfaction.
  • Administration and Management - Knowledge of business and management principles involved in the presentation and delivery of academic programs, strategic planning, resource allocation, leadership techniques, recruitment methods, and coordination of people resources.
  • Active Listening - Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
  • Critical Thinking - Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
  • Knowledge of educational, evaluation, and measurement principles, practices, methods and techniques, university policies and procedures.
  • Speaking - Talking to others to convey information effectively; ability to develop a rapport with students.
  • Written Expression - The ability to communicate information and ideas in writing so others will understand.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with students, faculty, and staff.

Additional Applicant Information Physical Requirement/ Demands This position requires working on a computer and sitting for extended periods of time, as well as walking across campus to various departments and may involve stairs or elevators. Work Environment This position is 100% in-person and is located on CSU's campus located at 9501 S. King Drive Avenue. The Office of Academic Support is housed within the Cordell Reed Student Union Building.
