General Summary:

  • Responsible for the daily operation of the Carpentry Shop, and ensures that work is performed as scheduled and to quality standards.
  • Coordinates the various skilled trade employees and contractors in the field for remodeling and renovation projects, which includes carpenters and painters.
  • Works closely with the Operations Supervisor in scheduling and planning the work of trade shops and outside contractors.
  • Leads and supports all phases of carpentry and painting duties, including repairs, construction and demolition.
  • Responsible for job site and equipment care.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
  • Work requires, in addition to the knowledge normally acquired through a general high school education, the ability to read blueprints and specifications, ability to operate various power tools and carpentry shop machinery and proficiency in use of numerous hand tools, and knowledge of safety procedures and practicesacquired in the first two years of technical school or with two additional years of work experience beyond the experience requirement listed below in lieu of technical school.
  • Work requires three and five years' progressively more responsible experience in order to acquire the ability to oversee the operations of the Carpentry Shop, the ability to lay out and measure various carpentry changes to the physical plant, knowledge of structural concrete and steel, masonry, and concrete block construction, and general knowledge of the various other trades (electrical, mechanical, plumbing and painting) sufficient to schedule and coordinate work in the field.
  • Work requires interpersonal skills sufficient to effectively assign work to Carpentry Shop staff, coordinate work with other shops and hospital departments, and effectively communicate with other vendors and contractors (6-20% of work time).
  • Work requires problem-solving skills sufficient to plan the performance of Carpentry Shop staff in several work locations, to accurately measure, lay out, and estimate the costs of carpentry work, to assist in planning and scheduling of large projects, and to troubleshoot problems related to work on large projects in the field.
  • Work requires reading blueprints and specification, measuring, operating power tools, etc., very frequently (51-80% of work time) requires concentration and attention to detail.
  • Work requires very frequently (51-80% of work time) requires physical effort in lifting materials, using of small hand tools, climbing ladders, bending, and stooping.
  • Must possess a current, valid Maryland Driver's License that has 2 or fewer points on it at time of hire. Must meet Sheppard Pratt requirements to operate a vehicle.
