Job Description

Job Summary

The Injury Prevention Coordinator and Educator is responsible for researching, developing, implementing and maintaining an organized interdisciplinary health approach to injury prevention. Areas of focus may include: motor vehicle occupant safety, motorcycle/bicycle safety/helmet initiatives, pedestrian safety, fall and/or firearm injury prevention, violence intervention, Stop the Bleed, and screening programs. As a community engagement strategy, this person will research available documentation regarding recent injury trends to develop effective mitigation approaches and provide for the education of healthcare providers and community partners in trauma preventative care.

Work includes:

  • Researching and developing graphs/tables and other documentation highlighting recent injury mechanisms or trends from the trauma registry
  • Reporting injury prevention activities, including related objectives and deliverables for each new injury prevention initiative
  • Developing, coordinating and maintaining approaches for community education and outreach designed to improve outcomes from trauma and minimize the effects of injury
  • Developing and maintaining, in collaboration with unit-based and regional RN educators, an organized trauma orientation for new nursing staff caring for trauma patients
  • Serving as an advocate for quality trauma-related patient care


The Injury Prevention Coordinator maintains a visible, clinical presence to ensure educational compliance and to identify areas that can be improved with additional or focused education. . The Injury Prevention Coordinator and Educator reports to the Trauma Program Manage/Director.

Qualifications

Education:
BSN required. Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing preferred with current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Indiana. BLS/ACLS/TNCC required. TNCC instructor preferred. Injury Prevention Coordinator course within one year of hire.

Training:
Preceptor orientation during initial employment period can be provided from an established trauma program. Additional training, obtained directly from an onsite registrar, will include use of the trauma registry and how to run data reports to determine top mechanisms of injury for education prioritization. Must successful complete the orientation skills checklist. The Injury Prevention Coordinator will complete a minimum of 8 hours of Injury prevention/trauma related continuing education per year.

Experience:
Five years of clinical trauma or related experience. Experience in the development and implementation of educational programs preferred. Ability to establish and maintain effective interpersonal relationships. Must have the ability to accept and implement change, problem solve and make decisions. Must have the aptitude to organize and prioritize multiple tasks and projects. Experience with staff or community education preferred.

Job Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to consistently accept responsibility for decisions and actions. Knowledgeable of American College of Surgeons (ACS) "Resources for Optimal Care of the Injured Patient." Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals. Ability to respond to common inquiries from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Thorough knowledge of nursing process and nursing theory. Familiarity with hospital organization, functions, policies/procedures as they relate to Trauma and Patient Services. Excellent communication skills imperative in relating to staff, physicians, patients, visitors, other departmental directors/managers and staff, media and other outside agencies.

Performance Requirements

Responsible for formulating, maintaining and executing evidenced based trauma policies and procedures. Coordinates educational activities within Trauma Services. Coordinates and assists with trauma education and injury prevention for staff, patients and public. Promotes and maintains communication, cooperation, and continuity of patient care between clinical departments, Medical Staff, and nursing in conjunction with the Department Director. Maintains knowledge of current standards of regulatory bodies. Maintains compliance with Nursing Standards of Care and Nursing Practice. Promotes professional growth of staff. Promotes patient and staff safety, infection control, and standard precautions. Maintains a safe and clean environment. Maintains supplies in a cost-effective manner. Provides input to the Department Director regarding departmental budget needs.

Presents self in a professional and courteous manner, appears well-groomed, and observes hospital dress code and wears identification badge while on duty as evidenced by appearance and mannerisms and holds staff accountable for same. Reports for duty on time, informs the Trauma Program Director of schedule, vacation, absences

Physical Demands:
Moderate standing and walking involved. Visual, auditory, and speech acuity essential. Works in areas and rooms which are well-lighted, heated, and ventilated. May need to participate in outdoor educational functions with suboptimal climate conditions. May come in contact with hazardous health conditions; however, if proper procedure is followed no harm should come to employee.

Special Demands:
Requires a high degree of concentration in order to complete tasks. Requires an understanding of intra/interdepartmental communication. Demonstrates accurate and timely completion of reports and presentations. Reflects the mission, philosophy, core values, and customer service plan of Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center in action and attitude. Demonstrates initiative and judgment in adapting or developing techniques and procedures to meet the needs of the Trauma Services Department. Maintains confidentiality. Displays commitment and loyalty to the Hospital and administrative team. Encourages nurses to be actively involved in the community as leaders in health and wellness promotion and injury and disease prevention. May need to participate in District and State meetings and other educational offerings. Assists with the marketing plan for the department.

May experience occasional overtime hours to meet educational deadline and in relation to re-verification readiness.
