Summary

  • Position Summary
    • Under general supervision by a physician, the athletic trainer (AT) will provide athletic training and clinical supports services in sports medicine and orthopedic practice. These may include but are not limited to: patient intake and rooming, obtaining a patient history, performing a physical exam, documentation in the electronic health record, patient education, casting and splinting application, durable medical equipment services , providing pre- and post-operative care for patients and assisting manage the clinical in-basket. If the AT also has obtained the Orthopedic Technologist Certification (OTC) he or she will also provide surgical assisting duties as directed by the orthopedic surgeon. These may include but are not limited to: patient positions, draping, using sterile techniques, passing of instruments, tissue retraction, management working portals and arthroscopic devices, graft preparation, skin closure and application of post-operative dressings as well as any other task delineated by the OTC scope of practice.

      The AT will also function as a liaison between physician's and local athletes at collegiate, high school youth programs. The AT will work closely with the Physical Therapy department to coordinate and organize post-operative protocols, rehabilitation and return-to-play procedures. In addition, the AT will assist the program manager with strategies related to marketing and program development within the community, such as coordinating athletic training services at youth sporting events and local high schools. Procedures such as wound care, cast application and removal, splinting and brace fitting, crutch and gait training, therapeutic exercise. Orders radiograph tests under physician guidelines. Performs diagnostic examinations and provide physical therapy under physician orders. Assists in surgery center for needs of physicians, will work as an assistant to the surgeon in the OR in any one or more duties including; prepping, draping and positioning of the patient, using suctioning, the arthroscopic camera and retracting tissue, prepping harvested tissues, and suturing/closing wounds under the supervision of the physician, provides proper post-operative care to the patient. Provides care with a "billing center" for ATC's in the clinic within their scope of practice. Helps in learning and teaching anatomy, MRI and x-ray reading, and learning the day to day needs for a medical practice to staff.

  • Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
    • Education: Bachelor's degree required (graduation from CAATE accredited program). Master's degree preferred (Post-professional masters in athletic training or a health related field).
    • License/Certifications: Athletic Training Licensure (or eligibility) in the State of Maine. BOC Certification. NBCOT Certification (eligible or application in process). CPR/AED Certification (must be completed through the American Heart Association).
    • Experience: 2-3 years' experience as a Certified Athletic Trainer (preferred).
    • NPI Number.
